How long does the backup take?

Are you backing up the entire volume or selected folders?

How full is Volume_1?

How many changed files are there between each backup period?

If the physical backup takes too long and is still in progress when the next backup period starts there are going to be a lot of orphan files taking up virtual space until the unit memory is cleared.
If you backup the entire volume it will take much longer than selected folders and can be the cause of period overrun.
If Volume_1 is almost full and you are backing up the entire volume there is not going to be much space for temporary files.
If there are a large number of changed files the space required to hold them increases by the number of files - one file changed 4 times a day creates the original and 3 copies a day.
