WD Green 1.5TB and 2TB compatibility, Seagate?
« on: June 21, 2009, 10:55:54 AM »

Hi.  I've been using the "Search" function for about 45 minutes trying to find info on this and have had no luck.

I'm looking for a definitive answer as to whether the Western Digital WD15EADS and WD20EADS, 1.5TB and 2TB "green" hard drives are compatible with my DNS-321.  I'd like to know which firmware update I need to install if necessary as well.  I'd prefer at least 1.5TB (and the 2TB is $$$), but what about the WD10EADS?

Are there any current users out there that have these drives installed?  Any issues?  I'd love to hear from you.

I'm not too fond of Seagate anymore, but any feedback as to whether Seagate's 1.5TB hdd fares any better with the DNS-321?

I have only tried the Seagate 1.5TB drives (in RAID 1), and they worked great for me.  I've never had any problems.  Good luck!

Do the Seagate 1.5's work in any other way besides individual disks and Raid 1? Could I hypothetically make a big Raid 0 or JBOD disk or does the firmware not support disk volumes that size?

The firmware will support a large single volume.

Could you clarify? I plan to use 2x WD20EADS (2TB) drives with DNS-323 in RAID1. Would it support this in firmware 1.07? Thanks.

I have two of the Seagate 1.5s set up as individual disks. It was my second pair, as at least one of the ones I got originally was defective. However, almost a week after formatting my two new drives, I can say I have not run into a problem yet. *Knocks on wood* Seems to be that if you can find some working Seagates you'll be in good shape. Also from my understanding I thought the max supported size is 1.5 tb.

In the current firmware 1.07 1.5tb drives will work, 2 TB drives are fully supported in 1.08 but it has not been released yet.

We went from talking about the DNS-321 to the 323.. Just to clarify 1.03 firmware for the DNS-321 will fully support 2TB drives and 1.08 for the DNS-323 will fully support 2TB drives.

I have two WD15EADS in my 321 and they are working just fine - only been using them for a couple of days however.  I am getting about 35 Mb/s with a Gig router and Gig adapter in my PC which seems a bit slow to me.  I am tuning for more speed (already set jumbo frames of 9K), am using EXT3 on RAID 1.  Any help would be appreciated.

Keep in mind that this little bugger has very little memory and therefore does not have a large cache.  I did some copying to the device the other day and did peak at I think about 14% of my gig port, which is a bit more than you are getting.

I am running the latest beta and funplug though.

I have the exact same setup as carm1575 (two WD15EADS in the 321) and the 321 (f/w 1.03) does not recognize the drives.  Even with 1 drive in the 321, it is not recognized.  The config page says there are 0 drives in the unit.  The 321 is brand new as are the WD15EADS units.  Both HD lights on the 321 are solid blue.  I could understand 1 drive being defective, but both!?  Or is it the 321?

It's simple to take the drives and connect them to your computer temporarily and test them with the manufacturer's diagnostic.  This will tell you if the drives are healthy.

I only have one computer with a SATA controller and it doesn't recognize the drives.  WD does not provide drivers as they indicate the SATA controller driver is sufficient.  If a similar problem is occurring on the 321, would a future firmware update fix this?  D-Link drive compatibility for the 321 lists the WD20EADS as compatible - if a larger sister of the WD15EADS works, I don't see why mine are not recognized.  For now I am guessing that both drives are defective.
