This problem occurs on my two Vista Ultimate boxes (under both SP1 and SP2). The problem is easily to duplicate on FW 1.06, 1.07 and 1.08 beta.
I change the location of My Favorites and My Documents (right-click, properties, locations tab) to directories on the DNS-323. I have tried full paths (\\DNS323\Volume_1\UserName\My Documents) and have tried mapping a drive letter to \\DNS323\Volume_1 and then setting the location to the drive letter and path (S:\UserName\My Documents). It doesn't seem to make any difference.
Periodically, when logging in, I get an pop up for both directories that says “The Recycle Bin on \\DNS323\Volume_1\UserName\[docs or favorites] is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive? Choices are Yes or No. I can’t quite tell what the rhyme or reason is. It happens if both computers are on or if only one is on. It doesn’t usually happen at every login, but it isn’t usually that hard to make it happen by logging out and in a few times.
If the recycle bin doesn’t “get corrupted,” it seems to otherwise work OK.
I have a coworker who doesn’t have a DNS-323, but rather just a full fledged Linux install running SAMBA. I assume that is what the DNS-323 is using, but of course, don’t know the distro, etc. Anyway, he has never had this problem, so I know it can be done.
Although it would be a bad workaround and not the solution, I’ve tried going into the Recycle Bin and disabling it for these two directories (Recycle Bin, properties), but that doesn’t seem to make a difference. This however, would probably be a Vista thing methinks for some reason.
