DIR-655 performance slows down when..
« on: October 29, 2014, 01:59:03 AM »

When i turn on emule or torrenting. I dont download much so its not really an issue generally, but now its a matter of principle, so i want to find out why.

When emule/torrent is NOT on, i easily reach 200Mbps on speedtest, but when i do turn it on, the performance is under 10Mbps.
If i have alot of connections, it even goes under 1mbps, and i tried that http connections to websites simply wont react unless i turn downloading off. When it was this bad, pinging the router would be above 800ms.
Limiting upload to 20kbps seems to help http browsing substantially.

I tried different things in settings, but i dont really feel any performance difference.
It seems to be stuck at downloading around 1Mbps, and when
Im hoping you guys have a straightforward answer, so i wont clutter up this post with more details.

Just ask what details you need to see, and i will provide with details.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Torrents and other DL programs are known bandwidth hogs due to how many connections they use. Usually defaults to maximum connections as possible, thus limiting other connections used by other devices and programs. This effect all Mfr routers if not configured or adjusted for download moderation..

My H/W version: b1.
Firmware Version :     2.09 , 19, Jul, 2013

I have checked out these guides multiple times, and i still cant believe the performance should be this bad even at low upload rates.

For example, i was downloading a demo on steam @ 7MB/s and then i turned on emule to see what would happen and it went down to 3MB/s just because of that. 10Kbps upload only.
And it wont respond to http router login when i want to access it now while steam is still going at 4Mbps after closing down emule.
I just shut down steam so there is no dl or ul and http immediately worked.

As you can tell, it seems really wonky.

Is it really normal that this router cant handle this?

I hope you can conclude something based on my details :)

I think it may depend on how those DL programs are configured as well. The should be configured so that they don't hog up all the bandwidth...

You may try setting up some QoS rules to see if that helps.

Hi, i set up QoS now, which i didnt before because i refused to believe this could be the reason.
Its no difference at all, it may even be worse.
Possibly because the router now has more work due to QoS?

Ur saying hogging the bandwidth.. why should 10KB/s upload on emule slow down http download by 60%? (70MB/s to 30MB/s)

Anyways,  heres a little taste of my pinging fun:
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=69ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=251ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=100ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=265ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=153ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=232ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=129ms TTL=64

edit:
I just ran speedtest again.. the first 10 seconds it was going at 500KB/s and then jumped to 10MB/s. odd.

How do you have your QoS set up? Post a picture of how you have it set up...

I also tried to put the same values in remote port range since i am at the stage where i just try whatever, but that doesnt make sense, and didnt make any difference either obviously :)

Your rules are incorrectly set up. You need to specify the IP address of the Devices your managing and want QoS to govern. So input the IP address of the PC or device in the Local From and To boxes.

I changed that to 10.0.0.2-10.0.0.200 but i dont see why that should help since 0.0.0.0 obviously covers 10.0.0.0, 172.16.0.0 and 192.168.1.0

utorrent and emule total speeds right now: 800kb dl and 100kb upload, while speedtest is only 3mbps dl/ul.
So, not much better unfortunaly.
when it seems to finally upload at 200kbps, my utorrent download basically dropped to 0?
edit:
Hmm, even limiting utorrent upload to a mere 20kb only gives 4mb/s.
Oh, and now it wont even react if i try to access router to login.
it makes no sense  :'(
edit2:
And simple redditing takes 30 secs to get a larger image.. :)

No, you need to enter in the IP address of the PC or device(s) that you are using torrent and emule on. Thats the LOCAL IP address range which needs to be, i.e 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.2 for both Local IP address range boxes.

Hi, i put the range to just the ip of my machine (10.0.0.2).

Less than 5 mins after i fired up for 2 ubuntu desktop downloads, the pinging is bad and speedtest can only do 5mbps, inspite of not even downloading at 1mbps and upload maxed at 50kbps.
(and max 60 connections in torrent)

Any other ideas?

And what did you set the other QoS rule too? That rule should be for the PCs that are not needing a higher priority and local range should be just for those PCs IP address.

Please post a picture of these settings...

What other QoS rule?

At the moment it look like this:

Personally, i think the remote ports should be 0, but 0 or these ports make no difference anyway.

This in incorrect..
You need on QoS rule for the one PC doing all the downloading.

Then you need one rule for ALL the rest of the devices that don't do any downloading and need higher priority.
Review this and look at the rule example for MULTI PC or DEVICE and and this one to your QOS rule.
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42011.0

I recommend that you set your downloading PCs IP address to .199, Then set the Mutli PC or Device rule local IP address range to .100 thru .150. Putting the download PC to .199 keeps it from being processed by the multi PC rule and in it's own rule for processing.

Lets focus on just the pc, since the other devices isnt really an issue.
My issue is that the network is slow when i download with torrents on the very same PC that i browse and do speedtest on.
(edit: Everything is slow, including the torrents, which download speed will be crippled to near nothing if the upload is above 500kb.)

Why cant i just choose an entire .255 range and keep it with that?

I feel this seems overly complicated compared to what i just need to do.
