Need help port forwading
« on: June 23, 2009, 05:36:53 PM »

Hey fellas,

I have the DIR-655 setup on my desktop with all the port forwarding done n working fine, but when I try to port forward on my laptop (wireless) for uTorrent and DC++ it doesn't work for some apparent reason. I gave my laptop a static IP just like my desktop n set it up just like I did on my desktop.

Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong here n help me get on the right track. If u need any more info from my part, please let me know.

Thanks

ISP?  uTorrent client version?  UPnP enabled on both the router AND the client?

Using UPnP works fine with these apps. But if there is a modem between the DIR and internet...those ports are not opened automatically (unless it's a 'dumb' cable modem with no security at all)

Thanks for the replies. My ISP is Telus n im using uTorrent version 1.8.2 (build 14458). "UPnP port mapping" is disabled on uTorrent n I believe it is enabled on my router, but im not too sure about that. Can anyone tell me how I can check that??

I do have a modem, but that shouldnt be a problem as far as I know. Also when I open uTorrents "speed guide" and I click on "test if port is forwarded properly" it says:

OK!

Port ***** is open and accepting connections.

You will be able to receive incoming BitTorrent connections.

Which I found a bit weird....

If it's giving you an "okay", then you did it correctly.  Enable UPnP on the uTorrent client, and you should be okay.  If it's still not working, then you may have something else blocking it.  I was pretty sure there was a 1.8.3 version.  Try that out.  It could just be that you aren't finding a torrent with enough seeders too..

I have tried enabling n disabling UPnP plenty of times, but it doesnt make a difference. And no seeders is not the problem. I don't get the "green check" in uTorrent that I get on my desktop, I get a yellow "triangle" instead which indicates that there is a portforwading problem. I could try the 1.8.3 version but im pretty sure my problem is that my router settings r wrong perhaps??  ??? It's not only uTorrent I can't connect to, I can't connect to DC++ either....

What firmware version are you using?  And, UPnP can be enabled on both router and client, and be on completely different ports for it to function.  Is that what you are doing? Or, are you doing something else?

Are the ports opened properly by the firewall?

@ Reinvented - Yes UPnP is Enabled on both router and uTorrent. I'm using firmware version 1.21 and yes they r all on different assigned ports.

@ Demonized - Firewall?? I'm not sure mate.....do you mean the router firewall or the firewall on my computer??

p.s. Btw my utorrent is working fine now, but I still cant get DC++ to work. If anyone could help me with that, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Just give both settings. I guess you know how firewalls work?

Another thing to keep in mind is that Telus blocks a lot of ports both incoming and outgoing to their DSL subscribers. I am certain that they would also be giving BitTorrent users grief on purpose as well.

Here's a lists of blocked Telus ports:

Not really mate, no. I'm not really good at technical aspects, as u may tell. If u tell me how to show my firewall settings, I can surely do that. But as far as im concerned its not a firewall issue since uTorrent seems to work but not DC++. Also I had no problems whatsoever with my old router, but ever since I replaced it with the 655, its been giving me this issue.

@ Johnnyboy! - Thanks mate but thats not the problem. My ports r different then the ones they block n like I said portforwading worked fine with my old router n my ISP was the same.

I dont know if this is gonna help or not, but I went to www.canyouseeme.org to check if my ports were open or not. When I put in my port number for uTorrent, I get:

Success: I can see your service on port (*****)
Your ISP is not blocking port *****

But for my DC++ port I get:

Error: I could not see your service on port (*****)
Reason: Connection timed out

1. you need to open the ports in Windows Firewall if DC++ does not support UPnP
2. You need to manually enter/open the ports on the DIR if DC++ does not support UPnP
3. You also need to open the same ports in your internet gateway device if it also has a firewall ('bumb Motorola cable modems have all ports open), UPnP does not work through from router to internet gateway (only from PC to router)
