Alright, sorry if this has been discussed before, and I missed it, but I swear I used the search feature up above for the DIR-826L. When I put in DNS-O-Matic or just dnsomatic, nothing came up. The same was pretty true for Google also, when I forced a search for "DIR-826L" and "DNS-O-Matic"

So as I posted above I am trying to set up DNS-O-Matic with the routers Dynamic DNS feature. Using the feature, I've been able to get the router to connect to individual places I currently have umbrella'd under DNS-O-Matic, such as No-IP.com, and those work fine, but when I put the required credentials in for DNS-O-Matic, it refuses to connect.

I am currently running firmware version 1.05.
I updated it just about an hour or two ago in response to the problem I am having now, but the newer firmware did not have a fix.
I didn't perform a factory reset before updating the firmware and I haven't performed one yet.
The only changes made to the router since the last factory reset several months ago was to change the login info and to forward a few ports and try to get the Dynamic DNS service running.


I have been able to connect to DNS-O-Matic through other means outside of the router, and everything works fine that way.
When checking through this website here,

everything looks good, and that link  updated EVERYTHING after that, and the system ran as it should. Not only that, it records the time and date, as well as the status of the connection for the instance when the page was accessed in the status logs of my DNS-O-Matic account.
 The problem is when I place the credentials into the ROUTER though and click the "Save Settings" button, the status notifier reads that it is attemption to make a connection for a bit before declaring it is "Disconnected"

The settings that I have configured into my router are as follows.

DYNAMIC DNS

Enable Dynamic DNS :      x
Server Address :      updates.dnsomatic.com   
Host Name :       all.dnsomatic.com
Username or Key :  **************@gmail.com      
Password or Key :   ******************************
Timeout  :     576   (hours)
Status  :      Disconnected

If needs be I can post a picture, though that was copied and pasted straight from my routers settings display (minus all of the astrik marks of course )
I've tried both my user name and email and neither seem to make a difference, (Though either work just fine for No-IP.org)

I followed these instructions to set up my router's setting page here (I'm not using dd-wrt firmware, the required info just seems to be the same and the page makes for a quick reference)

The OP of the thread was having this problem as was abm100 about 5 or 6 posts from the top. The models are obviously not the same, but I am hoping they might be similar enough that the information might be useful. I'm obviously no expert on routers, or I wouldn't be here, but from what I can glean, the theory is that since DNS-O-Matic forces everyone to use all.dnsomatic.com as the host name, and since DIL-825's update client doesn't consider that fit under the requirements for a valid host name, it causes everything to break down there.

Again, it isn't the same model, but it was one of the few things I came across while trying to nail this problem down that looked like it could potentially be an issue here. To be honest though, I'm basing the theory that the models are similar purely because their model number is only 1 digit off, so my apologies if the information is a tad bit irrelevant. I've been working on this since 10 pm yesterday, and it is now 2 am the following day, and perhaps I'm just trying to will myself to believe that at least SOMETHING I've found through all of this is even halfway helpful.

I would really appreciate any help that can be given. I use some technical terminology here and there, but the extent of my computer knowledge is from the Comp TIA A+ cert, and even then my networking knowledge is still significantly weaker than I'd like. I'm in the process of trying to learn more about networking and routing, but at this point, a lot of it still goes over my head, so the simpler the answer can be explained the easier of a time I am going to have trying to understand it.

Thanks again for your help. I really need this program working, and have come here because I have finally hit the point where I have no clue where to head next for answers. Anything you can provide me would be much appreciated.

I live in Arizona, a few hours out of Vegas
I am currently running firmware version 1.05.
I updated it last night  in response to this problem I am having now, but the newer firmware did not fix it.

I'm using frontier, it's 12mbps dsl, and my speeds have been pretty consistent.
 I'm actually not using my ISP's modem, I went out and got my own (theirs was a POS router modem combo)
 I'm using TP-links TD-8816 ( http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TD-8816 )
after pinning down one of their techs it was finally affirmed to me that I should have no difficulty using this modem and router combo with their ISP

As to compatability, again I'm no expert on networking or routing, but every other website I've attempted to plug in there such as No-IP.org has updated and connected perfectly in the built in Dynamic DNS updater. DNS-O-Matic seems like it would be even easier to work with, since all it does is relay the information it is given, but without any knowledge of how to get the router to show me the error code or tell me why it is not making a connection, I'm really sort of taking a shot in the dark here.

Everything is correct according to DNS-O-Matics specifications. The host name needs to be all.dnsomatic.com  which I have copied and pasted directly from their FAQ ( https://www.dnsomatic.com/wiki/faq?s=hostname ) and the Server Address is updates.dnsomatic.com which I have copied and pasted over from their support pages  ( https://support.opendns.com/entries/32825554-cannot-get-opendns-to-update-dnsomatic-services  (first comment down ). Their exact instructions was to leave the host name blank if possible, and if not (which is the case) to put all.dnsomatic.com in for the host name. The only thing that is left is the username and password, which are correct as well, as they are the same username and password required to get into my DNS-O-Matics account, AND OpenDNS. I've tried both username and email, and re-written the password several time's to make sure that I haven't typo'd but the problem doesn't seem to be any sort of "fat fingering" issue unfortunately.

I have messed around with the host name a bit as well, and tried things like replacing "all" with my username on their website but none of these things seem to have worked. I'm not really sure how to find any sort of more specific hostname from DNS-O-Matic as any queries into the subject seem to take my right back to putting in  all.dnsomatic.com  if I am unable to leave the hostname blank.

If this problem really all come down to the router simply checking the host name to see if it meets valid hostname requirments, and then not even attempting to make the connection when it feels the host name doesn't meet "up to code" is there really no way to get around that sort of thing? It seems like thats kind of a small thing that should be easy to work around, right?

If not, is there any way I could use my routers built in Dynamic DNS updater to update my No-IP.com account, and then just us my No-IP hostname to update my DNS-O-Matic account? Or is something like that outside of the scope of what this thread specializes in?

You may have a double NAT condition here:

• If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The original hardware they provided me was a router modem combo. It was Netgears 7550 with frontiers firmware on it. I have that original hardware my ISP provided me up in my closet. I got rid of their hardware and have been using a new modem, (the tp-link td-8816) which is only a modem, and the D-link 826L router. Frontier has assured me that the hardware I've set up will work just as well as theirs would have, they will simply no longer provide me technical service for my new hardware

the tp-link td 8816 does not have any routing capabilities though.

You're right, it absolutely does. Wow, I don't know how I've ever managed to miss that.

Ok so as I am looking into my routers settings it looks like the IP address provided for it's WAN port is not a private address, but starts off with 74.x.x.x

I also took a look at the physical router itself, instead of the page I bought it from, and the actual model I am using is the TD-8616
( http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?categoryid=&model=TD-8616#over ) NOT the 8816.

                                                                        I feel a little silly.

    The website I navigated to in order to get my modems make and model, was the one I originally bought it from. It had a drop down box with several different models listed provided by the manufacture that was being purchasing from. I'd forgotten that little detail. I just copied and pasted the info it gave me into Google to pull up the manufactures page.
 I hadn't realized at first, but 8816 was what was shown as default. After going and looking at the physical device, I've realized my blunder.
Sorry for the wild goose chase, I'll go put on some coffee or something so I can pay a little better attention, and maybe make sure I get sufficient sleep from now on while trouble shooting. haha, again my apologies, but thanks for the good reads, they were very informative.
I'll have to use the trick to look for at the IP info for a routers WAN port and verify if there is a "Double NAT" from now on while trouble shooting stuff like this.

Now I presume that there either is a misconfiguration of the DNS account info or this model router may only support D-Link DNS services that are preset already.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this if 3rd party DDNS services are supported or not. Ask for level 2 or higher support. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

The router seems to support custom set-ups and supports No-IP.com's host program when the info is placed in properly, which doesn't seem to have any sort of connection to D-link that I can see. I will be in Vegas all weekend for work, but when I return I'll give them a call and see what I can discover and post the results here.

Possible configuration or something in the FW isn't working right. Let us know how it goes when you get back. I'll pull my 826L out and have a look at it this weekend.
