Have to restart router every 2 days
« on: December 21, 2014, 06:17:31 PM »

A couple weeks ago I got a new "wireless gateway" cable modem.  I used to have a regular modem, and had no internet issues, ever.  Now, the modem acts as the "router", and it gives an IP to my router.  But my router is basically acting as a wireless point now.  Since this new equipment has been installed, I've had to restart my router every other day or so.  The internet service drops out (unable to load web pages) and after the reboot it works fine.  Know why this might be happening?  Tx.

Seems to work fine when directly connected.  Only wireless is having issues.  Will try factory reset tonight.

Just a suggestion: is the router located within 6 to 8 feet of a wireless phone base or wireless phone?  For some reason I was getting a conflict between an older 2.4Gzwireless set which (I think) caused my 655 to lose the connection to the I/net daily or every other day.  I shielded the phone from the router with a piece of tinfoil, but it looked ugly and wasn't the greatest solution.  Moving the router to a new location about 12' away from the phone seems to have done the trick, however.

Just my 2 ¢, hope it helps...

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

No remote phones near the router.

I have since traded in the wireless gateway (Comcast XB3 for those wondering) for an Arris TM722G (straight D3 modem).  This has been nice since I have my router functions back (most notably port forwarding).  I had a lot of guests over for the holiday and there were about 15 devices on my network, rather than the usual 4.  Historically this hasn't been an issue, but one of my laptops kept getting an IP address conflict message and had just terribly slow internet speed (< 1Mbps, normally I have 15-20).  I looked in the router settings and it had unicast enabled, so I disabled it and this seemed to give every device on the network faster performance.

I did a firmware upgrade to the router about a month ago, and then 2 weeks after I got that new gateway, and then I noticed problems.  I don't know which was to blame, the f/w upgrade or the new modem / gateway.  My guests are now gone, so I'm going to wait and see if performance and reliability improves, if it doesn't I think my next step will be reverting to the 2.03 f/w.  The 2.03 f/w also did not require reboots every time a setting was changed in the router, which I like.

I also wanted to mention that on the devices, it shows the DNS servers as 192.168.0.1, and then the 2 Comcast servers.  Should my router be listed in there as a DNS server?

If DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking Is enabled then client devices will see the routers IP address for DNS. You can disable DNS relay and input manual DNS addresses as well on the router. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Should DNS Relay be on or off?

I downgraded the firmware to 2.03 (the f/w I had about a month ago) and I saw an immediate increase in performance (android phone and tablet seeing ~20Mbps vs. the 6Mbps they were seeing previously, my laptop is still dragging @ 6 Mpbs... not sure why).  The wired computers are seeing almost 30Mbps now.

DNS Relay is on and grayed out, I can't shut it off.  I think it was always like this but I never noticed before.

Hopefully I'm back to where I was before the f/w upgrade and the new Comcast cr@p.

Might try your own modem...i.e. Motorola SB 6141 series would be good.

I've heard good things about that one but unfortunately I need an MTA.

Went back in and saw that all the QOS s*** was enabled... not sure how this happened.  I disabled it and my 'slow' laptop is back to normal DL / UL speed.

Man this friggin router is picky.

May have been a cached setting or something in your browser which saw QoS as grayed out. Not sure what you saw. I've never seen that LOL.

QOS was never grayed out... DNS relay was.

Ah, my bad. Ya, DNS shouldn't be gray out. I typically uncheck and disable DNS relay and input other DNS or use faster DNS using name bench. I only test DNS Relay enabled when testing newer FW builds for short duration testing.  ::)
