Enable Routing Between Zones Not Working?
« on: January 02, 2015, 03:17:29 PM »

I am trying to get 2 security cameras which are connected to the guest network to connect to my server which is hard wired in but they are not seeing each other.  Upon further inspection, I see that no computer on my guest network can see (nor communicate) with any computer on the private network.

The check box that reads "Enable Routing Between Zones" does not appear to be changing the routing preferences at all.  Any ideas?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.

Do  the cameras work together on the Main LAN and not connected to the Guest Zone?
Are they connected wirelessly? What radio are they connected to?

Hardware V1A
Firmware V1.07
Region is South Eastern US

The ISP isn't involved at all as the router is sitting in a DMZ for the modem.  AT&T router/modems are garbage so i just disabled it and put my router behind it in the DMZ.

There are no IP conflicts on the network.  I have all of the active devices and their current IP leases in front of me and the cameras are using free addresses.
Aside from my computer(s) and these two cameras, everything on my network is set to auto config.
IPv6 is disabled across the board.
The firewall settings are default but there is no option for Endpoint Independent.  Toggling packet inspection doesn't help.  There are no port forwarding rules set up related to the cameras.
WPS is off.
Port speed is auto.
Date and Time are current.

Both cameras communicate perfectly if they are on the default subnet (168.1) with the server.  They are connected wirelessly through the 2.4 band.

Well the only thing I can suggest is updating FW and see if that helps.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Will do.  In the mean time, I am just disabling the guest zone and moving the cameras back over to the main subnet.

Initially I wanted to set up the cameras on a hidden network, but since I can't hide the guest network, I had to use the main network, hide it, and move general traffic over to the guest network.

I recommend keeping general traffic and devices on the main LAN side of the network as you'll loose management and features of the router if you use the guest zone. Guest zone is for temporary guest connections with limited access and router management features to access the internet. Router features like QoS and filtering can't be used on the Guest Zone. If your trying to keep your set work safe and secure, the use of WPA2 security is all thats needed. Even if the SSID is hidden, there are way that users can gain access to the hidden names. Hidden names only work to a point. Overall, the router should work well for both LAN side and Guest Zone access. Keeping the Guest zone to those devices that only need temporary internet access. You can hide the SSID if you wish. I'd keep camera and your LAN side devices to the main LAN side configuration. Keep It Simple.  ;)

Eh, I'm not worried too much about security for the most part.  I live in the middle of no where with no neighbors.  My main concern was getting the cameras on a separate VLAN so I could segment the traffic and keep general use traffic away from the cameras for better framerate/quality from them.  Since I can't communicate across the subnets it wont work since the server hosting the video capture is on the main subnet.

Why not segment the traffic by using a wired Gb network switch for all wired devices on the LAN side. Leave the wireless connections on the router. THe router can process and handle the wireless traffic and video just fine with out trying to separate it. I know a guy who has a couple cameras connected to his 868L and has zero problems with video.

Since your not hear anyone else, There really is no need to hide SSIDs. Let the router handle and process it all. You wont have any problems. I use a 25 port network switch with my router.

Maybe I need to update the cameras then.  I'm getting 3FPS off the cameras and I just associated it with network traffic.  I could always just hard-wire them in too, wireless is just easier and I'm lazy  ;D  Of course, there could be interference between them too but I don't have an analyzer to dig through and see.

Thanks for all your help!

  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?

What camera Mfr and models do you have?

The router unfortunately, is placed in a room that has 2 masonry walls between it and the cameras so I'm sure that isn't helping.  There isn't any other WiFi in the area (living in the country and all).
The default SSID was changed before anything else (excluding default login) :)
Wireless modes are mixed, both 2.4 and 5GHz.

The cameras are these:

Ya masonry walls may have some metal rods that will inhibit some signal range. Any chance you can get the router out side of this area into a more central location or with in better range of the cameras?

I would also run some tests with the camera(s) in the same room as the router. I presume this will help you check FPS rates. I would try single mode N on the router since the cameras support N mode, also if you can run single mode N for the rest of your devices, disable HT 20/40 Co-existence as well. Use WPA2 and AES for best performance. If you don't have any concerns about neighbors or others using the WiFi, you could disable WPA entirely and test.

If you can get better signal with the router and camera placement and maybe close the distance if possible between the router and cameras, maybe you can get the FPS to increase.

I can't move the router and moving the cameras kind of defeats the purpose of them.

I was hoping to be able to move the traffic over because I can't really make any physical changes.  Either way, it's kind of a terrible set up for wifi, but I can't do much about it at the moment, short of rewiring the house.  I can't swap the router over to N only because there are other users here with some old devices that only support G.

Guess I'm just going to have to try and make the best of a bad situation.

Ok, switch to mixed G and N mode keeping WPA2 and mixed security enabled with HT 20/40 enabled.

The test to see if a camera works in the same room as the router is just a quick test to see if the FPS goes up. I presume that the reason for the low FPS is the singnal strength is bad so the FPS from the cameras will be low and is probably how they are designed. Thus the reason for testing in same room.

To help with WiFi, maybe adding an additional wireless 2.4Ghz AP to the mixed that gets closer to the cameras could be used. I would use a wired AP to ensure good signal and data flow from the cameras thru the AP to the router. You can use the same SSID and PW and use different channels or maybe use a different SSID for the AP and cameras, leaving the router for general traffic and devices as a alternative suggestion.

Yeah my thought was an AP closer to the cameras too, but I was messing with the guest network anyway so that's what led me here.

Totally separate question now, I turned off the guest network and renamed my primary SSID to match so all the devices should bounce back over (once they reacquire a new IP) but now all the devices are picking up an IP address and the primary DNS that is to a range extender on my network.  What in the hell?  I don't see an option to set a DNS on the router.
