DNS 320 not showing as a device on the network
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:18:30 AM »

I am trying to set a DNS-320 to use as a backup destination for my Synology NAS. i have been trying for days to set it up and before i give up i thought i would post here and see if any one can help!

I can see and access the NAS as drive on the computer. however, it doesn't show up in the devices list. So when i search for the device in the synology DSM, it can't be found. I thought it was my lack of knowledge in setting it up. however, when i run the sharecentre wizard or the storage utility the DNS-320 cant be found, yet when i plug it directly in to my computer with a cable the device can be seen on the sharecentre wizard.

I have update the firmware to Rev2 1.02.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Hi, I am not sure the stock Dlink NAS will serve as a backup location for the Synology NAS.  Manufacturers often limit such easy backups to their own devices with stock firmware anyway.  There are PC based backup solutions for such backups but you need to have the PC up and running.  Not seeing the Dlink from Synology's GUI is therefore not surprising, but not seeing it with Dlink's software is.  I would consider trying a hard reset, paper clip in reset hole 10-12 seconds while unit is powered on.  This "should" just clear any user settings and ip information leaving your data intact, but a backup is always recommend first.  I am not sure how you were able to map the drive if you cannot see it on your network.  What type of home networking do you do?  Is there a HomeGroup setup?  Does that Synology NAS show up in your network?

You know the IP addresses of both NAS presumably.

What you are describing sounds as if the default IP address of the DNS-320 is not on same subnet as your network.  There is no way they can 'talk' to each other unless they are on the same subnet and preferably have fixed IP addresses.  This is the first thing you should check (there is a vast difference between 192.168.0.xxx and 192.168.1.xxx and they will NOT work together)

Not being well versed in the way Synology go about implementing their backup options I would assume you should be able to backup to any device on the network that has a valid IP address and it shouldn't matter if it is a NAS or computer.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have had a few things going on so i haven't been able to check in for a while.
After doing a bit more digging, i think my problem was that the dlink didn't allow SSH. So i installed fun plug. This worked once, but now i am having logging on  issue with fun plug. i'm going to look through some old threads, if i can't find anything i may start a new thread.
