Ok folks, this is very strange.
DNS-327L with 1.03 firmware.
Attached to the USB: WD MyBook 1TB with NTFS file system.
Sharing options: it's not possible to define a network share on the USB disk, so it is accessible to everyone on the network.

This is what happens:
I can view the USB disk and all its files. However, I cannot access SOME OF THEM.
Example: two .avi files in the same folder, same extension and similar dimension. One is accessible (via web browser, network folder, vlc player or WDTV), the other gives the following error:
web browser returns an error 500;
copy via file system access gives an I/O error;
VLC logs say file system error;
WDTV says it can play the selected file.

The files are all accessible if I plug the WD directly to the PC or to the WDTV.

Update: copying from linux of those files gives an "invalid argument" error.
Ruled out causes:
- special characters in the filename: files with "plain" names give errors; files with "[ ] ( )" do not;
- spaces in the path (in the file name or in the folder name): some files with no spaces give errors and some files with spaces do not;
- file dimension: tried with big ones (1GB or more) and small ones (2MB); only some have problems;
- path length: files with same path length act differently;
- network problem: I can access correctly files inside the DNS-327 internal disks;
- file system problem: when connected directly to the PC the USB disk works fine;
- file system/network combo: when the USB drive is connected to my WDTVLive I can access it through samba with no problems.

Still to rule out:
- file type, but it seems improbable: some .avi have problems, some other not. some .jpg have problems, some other not. I still have to find a pdf/doc/xls which returns the error.

It seems a bug on how DNS-327 handles the external file system.
Any other suggestion?

Did a full checkdisk. Still not working.
I have to buy another NAS for my brother, I think I'll switch to a Western Digital My Cloud Mirror and see if it's better.
