Shareport Use & HDD Size Questions
« on: January 11, 2015, 12:19:00 PM »

I have DIR-655 REV A4, Firmware 1.34NA...works fine.
I have been trying to figure out how to do a poor mans NAS with my USB HDD enclosures.....been looking at Wifi-to-USB adapters, etc.
I have all W7 64-bit machines and don't like the solutions out there but then remembered the USB port on the DIR-655.
I did some reading and I guess "SharePort" now has updated util that works ?
If so, what size USB HDD can I put out there ?..........I found this thread but suspect that the 500MB/1TB is old comments and those were max HDDs at time.
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=35iss2ji5kt5mgjhpc7lkb2ld5&topic=58799.0
I have a G-Drive 2TB I was thinking of using is why I'm asking.
Any other suggestions in the use other than going into the DIR-655 and enabled USB as Shareport and install the v4.3 Shareport Util on my PC ?

Thx.

Router USB HDD Max Size FAQ

The DIR-655 is not listed.....is it 1TB limit ?
Also, is there transfer rate limitations by this Sharepoint method ? ......I plan to use it as backup for files from one specific PC...not as a Media Share/Server.

I did some testing on mutiple routers a while back with my 2Tb WD MyBook 2007 drive. Seem to work on some and not others. I'll have to dig up my findings and post them. Over all if your doing large sizes of backups or files, I would not recommend using USB as your method. Can be very slow.

If your doing just short or small stuff, it would be ok then.

2Tb works on my Rev B using SP v430, however I I can't check with my Rev A since it's loaded w v1.11 FW and SharePort didn't get added till v1.21 FW.

I can only presume it may work on Rev A...  :-\

Thx....I run my backups at night while asleep........how does the drive map/show in Windows ?
I use Macrium Reflect for imaging which it's backup "job" (scheduled to run 3am) I setup has the drive letter / folder of the USB HDD designated in it.
I'm just wondering if this will work with/thru SP v430 ?

Also, can you drag/drop a file to the USB and see what Windows says the transfer rate is ?
I know not completely accurate but rough indicator.

Thx !

After you select Connect on SharePort, it will open up a new WIndows Explorer window that shows the contents of the USB drive.

I presume it should since your router FW is beyond v1.21

You should be able to drag and drop files into the Explorer window and see rates as well.

Will it assign a drive letter that I can use in my image software as the "target" of the image destination ?
In "Computer Management > Disk Management" within Windows does the drive show ?

Thx !

Yes it assigns a open drive letter. I presume it would appear in Disk Management as well since a drive letter is used and mounted.

Wow, first....you are awesome....thx so much for all the insights !
Hopefully, last question. :)
So, since the USB HDD connected to the Router won't be pulled/disconnected "physically" do you need to "disconnect" at the PC ?
Here is my scenario.......plan to use this HDD as my "target" for my nightly backups....first for one PC...maybe more in house over time.
The one PC is my work laptop so I will boot it down and bring to office couple times a week.....work from home a lot too.
However, each night it is at home and will "backup".
So, when I shutdown do I need to disconnect first thru the util ? .......I don't on normal USB HDD since Windows handles the disconnect/power on Shutdown.
On boot-up do I need to start the util on the PC and/or could it be loaded into Startup section ?
Right now the USB HDD is set for NTFS.....I assume there is no restrictions on file "type" thru the Router for Shareport ?

Yes, you'll need to disconnect using the SharePort application when your finished using the drive.

Yes, NTFS is preferred formatting of the USB drive. Test with a small flash USB drive first and see how it all works.
