Port Forwarding simply not working.

I've just spent 5 hours going through every bit of information I could get my hands on and I cannot get port forwarding to work.

I already have :

Check for firmware updates
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
Try multiple ports just to make sure
Factory reset my router and manually set it up again
Try Virtual Server instead of Port Forwarding
Disconnect/reconnect router, modem. computer.
Shut off completely anti-virus and firewall after testing with exceptions

I probably have done more but at this point I just cannot remember it all. I am getting frustrated. It simply refuses to work. Help me, please.

Which TCP or UDP port do you want to forward and for what kind of application?
Do you get a public IP address from your ISP for your router's WAN interface? If not (WAN address inside one of the ranges 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, 192.168.0.0/16 or 100.64.0.0/10), you are behind another NAT router, possibly your modem if not working in bridge mode or a Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) operated by your ISP. In the first case change your modem to operate in bridge mode. If this is not possible, you also have to repeat the forwarding configuration inside your routing modem (where the forwarded address has to be your DIR-825 WAN address). If you are behind a CGN, port forwarding won't work.

I want to forward 16261-16326 for a ProjectZomboid server.
I have Java 64 and run ProjectZomboid 64.

The IP address showed to me in the D-LINK router admin WAN Interface is xxx.xxx.xxx.224. I believe that is a correct public IP address.

Believing is not very concrete...

At least you could tell the first xxx of your WAN address: If it is not one of 10, 172, 192 or 100 you can be sure it is a public IP address.

Hence, given it is not private, how do you access it from the Internet? Do you use it directly (e.g. if it never changes) or via some Dynamic DNS service?

Furthermore, port forwarding might actually work, but your ProjectZomboid server (whatever that is) refuses connection attempts from external sources due to some host based firewall rules active on your server?

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Sorry, I thought only the end was important! It starts with 107. It is public then.
What do you mean in your second sentence? I'm not sure what you want to know or what you're asking about, sorry.
I used multiple sources to test the port states, at the moment they are http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ and http://www.canyouseeme.org/. It isn't only the server refusing to connect, the ports don't seem to forward at all.


H/W is B1.
Firmware version is 2.62VT. When I tried to update it said up to date.
Canada, QC.
Factory reset has been performed before trying to update the firmware.
Since it was up to date I didn't bother to reset another time.
It was working fine before a technician came in and had to change the emplacement of the router.
It was needed since I had a new main computer in a different location.

ISP is Videotron. Cable.
Modem is an Arris TM722G/NA-8.
DCHP is setup correctly. Main computer is .100, phones and laptops goes from .101 to .105.
How do I check for auto obtain? Pretty sure it is already done though.
IPv6 options was found in Advanced/IPv6 and set up to Link-Local Only.
Firewall were already setup to Endpoint Independent (read that from you somewhere else, forgot to include in the list).
Tested with SPI disabled, not working either. I will turn it on and off in the future tests.
Disabling uPnP for testing purpose. Does it have to stay off until Port Forwarding works? Does not work either.

I would phone contact your ISP service and ask for help and information on this. This router and the FW on it belongs to Videotron thus they are the owners and developers of the FW for it. There maybe some differences in the FW or configurations that is keeping you from achieving correct Port Forwarding configurations and status.

When those portscanners say, that the relevant ports are closed, this might mean either your DIR-825 doesn't forward those ports or it does, but your server the packets are forwarded to runs a firewall that blocks these ports.

In order to exclude the last case, check if your ProjectZomboid server has a firewall (OS firewall or some other) running. If so, give it a try and stop it for some time - then check if your selected portscanner tools still show these ports as closed.

I turned off everything and it didn't fixed the problem. I also contacted my ISP, which really I probably won't ever contact again for technical support. They had no other way of helping me other than resetting my router and modem. Hilarious really. Then they told me it wasn't their fault, and I had to contact the ProjectZomboid's support team.

Anyway, I didn't try to argue and since I know it has nothing to do with the game at all because it works for hundreds of people but not me, thus meaning the problem is coming from my setup, I'm stuck yet again. Everyone tries to redirect me to someone else. Classic. I will probably just try another router and see if the problem comes from my unit.

Any chance you have a store up there that has a D-Link retail model router that you can test with? A store that has a refund policy? It would be good to test a different model router. IF the retail works, then you could send the Videotron back to your ISP. See if you can find a retail DIR series router there and test.
