DIR-655 v B1 internet randomly goes out
« on: January 14, 2015, 11:33:50 AM »

So I have the DIR-655 v B1 2.11NA firmware and it constantly goes out through out the day and its only the internet websites i can't visit, my games don't disconnect I can play all my games fine its just i can't go to any websites for about 10-20 mins then it will fix its self and start working again. To speed it up i just unplug the power and turn it back on and everything is fine or just reboot the router it fixes it, but it's really annoying any idea how to fix this? I looked at other posts and changed some setting's but nothing helped so and way to fix this would be awesome.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
>FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

The internet still works so its not the modem in that way i just can't go to any website's port 80 goes down or something.

Im in california USA. I am wired but also the wireless computers in my house dont get websites while the router is having problems. The last router we had was D-link and it never had any of these problems so im sure its the router. Yes I did a factory reset to it problem is still there. never updated the firmware.

I have cable, the modem works fine its just the router that has the problems. If i hook the cable modem to my computer it works fine.

So, when the internet on the router goes down i can still play my games showing the internet is still working half way just any website i go to it won't come up so port 80 is down or whatever but all my games that require internet access will still work. so if there is any fix that you know of i would love it

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Just making sure your modem doesn't have NAT.

One test to try, game LAN wired to the router and turn OFF the WiFi radio to see of the problem persists.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

If it still happens even after turning off the WiFi, There maybe a ISP service and signal issue. I would try a different modem and have the ISP check the signal line.

Try the router at a different location, say at a friend, neighbor or families place to see if the router problem follows or not.

What would it be if it was the wifi causing websites not to work.

Did you disable the WiFi on the router or no your PC. Be sure to disable the WiFi ON the router and test LAN wired connections.

I also get spammed with a ton of UDP and TCP protocols coming from my ip address on the router so if that has to do with anything

If you have other WiFi neighbors you could be seeing some congestion and interferences that can cause the router to stop working:
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy

  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Spam from your IP address meaning from your one particular PC? or the WAN side? If it's your PC, then check the PC for malware. Use Malware Bytes to scan for bugs. IT's free to use.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
