Author Topic: Speeding up copying from a DNS320 to a DNS320L... is there a way?  (Read 2595 times)

Hi all.

I have 2x DNS320's configured as individual Vol1 & Vol2 on each. One backs up to the other each night.

I have now bought myself a DNS320L + 2x 4TB disks and have configured it as RAID 0. It appears as a single volume of over 7TB.

What I now need to do is copy across all the data via a W7 machine. Is there a clever way of doing this to speed things up?
Using Windows copy/paste i'm getting  5.6mb/s.

Are there real advantages using DOS commands or a third party program like TerCopy, RichCopy, etc?

Many thanks in advance.

The DNS-320L should have an application called Local Backups used to schedule backup jobs from other storage locations on the same LAN to the DNS-320L.  You can enter the address of the DNS-320 (e.g. //192.168.0.1/Volume_1) and then select a destination location on the DNS-320L and schedule the job to run. Make sure you select Incremental Backup to avoid copying your entire data structure each time you run a job. Another common configuration mistake: make sure you select Type = Folder (you're see what I'm talking about once you start playing with the app). Once your data is synced up, you can schedule recurring nightly jobs.

If you haven't done so, you may want to place the DNS-320 and DNS-320L on an isolated switch to remove any potential throughput bottlenecks or performance hits to other users on your LAN.

There is one thing you can do so that you can get better transfer speeds, as long as your pc has a gigabit network card.. Buy a cat5e cross network cable and connect your windows 7 pc directly to 320L. In order to achieve a connection, both devices must have static ips. I followed that method and the speed I got was around 40 MB/s. To tell you the truth, I was expecting higher speeds but I guess that the 320L CPU can't really handle a full gigabit connection. Hope I helped.
