DNS-345: Problems with USB backup
« on: January 21, 2015, 01:06:38 PM »

I'm having big problems trying to backup my DNS-345 to an external USB drive.

I've attached a WD Elements 4T USB 3 drive to the USB port on the DNS-345, enabled USB backups and selected the root folder of Volume_1 as I wish to back up everything.  When I try to select a destination for the backup, I'm presented with a blank dialog with a 'New' button but no 'USBDisk1' to create something New under.  If I click the New button and enter a folder name, the dialog goes blank. In short, backup does not seem to see the external USB disk.

System management shows me that the WD external disk is mounted on the NAS.  I had similar results with a Seagate 3T drive.  A 1T WD Passport (bus powered) drive worked.

Anyone have any advice on what disks work and don't work, whether I'm doing anything wrong or whether there is an alternative backup mechanism I can use?

Many thanks!

Possible drive size limitation on the USB port?
What is the formatting of these drives? NTFS is preferred I believe...

All 3 drives were formatted NTFS.  Tried the 3T formatted down to FAT32 with a smaller partition but no joy.

Drive size limit may be an issue but doesn't make sense for a NAS where there is a need to back up huge amounts of data.

I presume that if the 1Tb drive worked and the bigger sizes don't and you've set them up similar to the 1Tb drive, possible that there is a limitation here. I know we have similar limitation for USB drives on routers. 500Gb to 1Tb is about the max. There are reasons for that, however behavior is different on routers. I presume that DNS should handle things differently.  ???
