I'm not surprised. You would be shocked (or perhaps not) how many small to large (Fortune 500) size businesses are operating without a safety net for their data, I've seen reasons range from:
- Failed job schedulers that no-one routinely checks/validates
- IT administrators leaving the organization with no procedures or knowledge transfer communicated to replacements that routine backups are required
- No backups EVER made for specific storage locations
- Improperly configured backup jobs resulting in defective backups (what you described earlier)
All this doesn't even account for the fact that the vast majority of organizations do not backup corporate laptops which are vulnerable to breakage, loss, and theft, resulting in lost data and productivity. For a fortune 500 sized company, what is the cumulative annual loss in revenue from all those laptops whose HDDs that are irreconcilably corrupt or which are outright lost/stolen?
And how about mobile phones and tablets? How many people routinely download their cherished photos and videos to another storage location? And of those people that do download their photos/videos, what fraction of those people maintain a backup of the photo/video archive?
Need I say more!
