Clarification on rsync backups

Hi. I've been lurking for a few days and finally ordered my unit yesterday. My intent will be to store the family pictures, music, and videos on this thing in a closet and then once a routine is in place, forget about it.

I'm throwing two 3TB drives that I already have into it for a mirror set but would like to program a daily incremental rsync job. I know that there is a GUI interface that allows you to use the 327 as the triggering side of the job but what I'm wondering and wanting clarified is whether or not it can also act as an rsync server and just allow me to pull from it using either the admin, or a backup user set of credentials?

I have a backup machine in my office with a set of cron triggered rsyncs already setup and simply adding this new device to it's routine will work much better from a management perspective. Can anyone clarify if this is possible?

My hint: don't struggle with the built-in backup functions.

positive aspect of  thebuilt-in backup functions: They are based on rsync, i.e. no pure trash.
downside: I found they are pretty useless for advanced needs.

I also incrementally backup data from my DNS-327L to an external Linux system. At the very beginning I checked out the built-in backup functionality (in order to check if this already does what I want). I finally managed to make the "Remote Backup" function work - but only on a very basic level. As far as I remember, I found that the support for incremental backups (which is mentioned in the handbook) is only available for backups from the Linux System to the NAS, not the other way around (which was what I needed).

Since you seem to have some Linux knowledge and experience you could consider a similar solution as I chose:
I installed fun_plug 0.7 to my DNS-327L. D-Links NAS devices are actively prepared for such extensions (though these are not officially supported). This gives you SSH access to the DNS-327L and you can use the existing programs, install new ones, create and customize scripts etc.

So it is quite easy to activate the rsync daemon in order to schedule backups from an external system.
