VPN & Network Resources Issue
« on: January 27, 2015, 05:08:59 PM »

Model DSR-500N
Hardware Revision A1
Firmware Current ( Jan 27th 2015 )

Setup the 500N was easy, the firmware upgraded no problem, the issue I'm having is after successfully connecting from a remote computer though PPTP VPN, the remote machine cannot see any of the network resources, I'm able to ping everything though the tunnel, however when clicking Network under Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1, none of the other computers on the DSR-500N side are showing.

Can someone please point me in the correct direction, thanks.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

I presume maybe one thing to check is to see if the other computers are all on the same work group name or domain and that the router is set up for local domain name to be the same as well.

Not sure how the configuration would be for PPTP VPN...I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

According to the manual, if you configure a PPTP SERVER you specify a range of IP addresses that is allocated to the PPTP clients and a 'PPTP Routing Mode' being either NAT or Classical. From these two facts my understanding is, that PPTP clients use an IP range different from your LAN and hence packets sent from or received by PPTP clients must be routed (PPTP Routing Mode=Classic) or even routed and NATed (PPTP Routing Mode=NAT) to or from your LAN respectively. Since enumeration of network resources (under 'Network') depends on broadcasts and/or multicasts, but broadcasts/multicasts cannot be routed/NATed, browsing network resources won't work for PPTP clients.

But the manual also says on page 123: "The range of IP addresses allocated to PPTP clients can coincide with the LAN subnet."

If true, this would mean you could specify a range to be used by PPTP clients that is part of your LAN address range, but of course is not in use by internal LAN devices. In this case packets would not be routed but bridged and browsing network resources should work. The only confusing thing is what 'PPTP Routing Mode' should mean in this case because there is no routing involved  ???
