Author Topic: Bought a Repeater/Bridge with AP to extend my D-Link primary router  (Read 8707 times)

So, I got a TP-Link Repeater and Bridge with AP thing to do a wireless bridge to my primary router.  It's not working but out of curiosity, do I need to do anything to change on my primary router?  I added the MAC address of my wireless bridge on the primary router and I can ping the primary router from my bridge.  However, when devices connect to the bridge/AP, they are unable to ping the primary router.

Here's what the topology looks like:
internet > modem / router from ISP > DIR 636L > TP-Link Wireless Bridge > ioT device (*no internet :()

Connecting directly to my DIR-636L works fine and there's no problem in that aspect.

I'm not hoping for troubleshooting tips as this is a D-Link forum after all.  I'm hoping for some ideas from the network savvy folks here and if maybe there's something that I should be disabling/enabling from the DIR-636L.  Any ideas are appreciated.

Link>Welcome!

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

li]What wireless modes are you using?[/li]
[li]2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?[/li]
[li]Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.[/li]
[li]Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.[/li]
[li]What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES. Disable WPA security on the 636 router temporarily and see if the TP-Link bridge can connect and pass thru any internet access. Re-enable after testing[/li][/list]

You may need to contact the Mfr of the bridge as well for help and information....

Hi FurryNutz!

Nice to be back!
FW: 1.04
HW: A1
My Wireless is 802.11G only.
Channel Width: 20 MHz only.
My Wifi Security is WPA-Personal.  Cipher TKIP.
Region: Philippines/Asia

I'm trying to contact the manufacturer to see what they think, but I remember getting some very valuable information here so I thought to drop by and pick your brain a bit if that's OK. :)

So far, the issue seems to be that when connecting via bridge/AP, I cannot get to my DHCP server (DIR-636L).  No internet at all, which is... weird. :(

Maybe I should try disabling wifi and see if that helps.

Well if you disable the WiFi on the 636, then the TP link can't connect.

Try disabling WPA altogether on the 636L and see if the TP link can connect and pass thru internet. If not, then the TP may not be configured right or is faulty.

Keep us posted.

Oh sorry, FurryNutz.  I misspoke and said wifi when I meant WPA.

A tech support guy came over and checked.  Basically, the model I bought is TL-WA901ND for reference and that the Bridge with AP DOESN'T WORK.  He advised we switch to Universal Repeater and that worked.  I updated the MAC address list on my DIR-636L just to be sure but I don't know if that actually mattered.

It actually took a while before the Repeater mode would get connected to my primary router, but after that wait time, it seems to be working.  Looks like its mostly the TP Link product at fault here and nothing else.  Wish D-Link actually had repeater products being sold here.

I'm going to observe this as the connection to the repeater was dropping.  We repositioned the repeater and it seems to have improved.  The tech support guy said it could be that the walls were too thick and the repeater was having trouble getting to the primary router.  All wait and see at this point.

Ok, thanks for the update.

D-Link does have some range extender (repeaters)...
