I have a dlink DIR-826L (FW:1.05) running as a router at a remote location. Behind it I have a win7 box (local subnet is 192.168.9.1/24) and another DIR-826L setup as an AP. I have config'd a Virtual Server for the win7box which allows me to remote into it using RDP. I have also config'd a Virtual Server entry for the AP (192.168.9.xxx), forwarding public port 8531 to private port 80 (I've tried 8080, 8090 with https, 8531, etc...) but I cannot get to the AP's webadmin. However, I can get to the AP's webmin via the win7box thru the rdp via http://192.168.9.xxx just fine. (I can also specify http://192.168.9.xxx:80 and even 192.168.9.1:8531 !!!). That is, I rdp to the win7box first. From there I use a browser to access http://192.168.9.xxx which gets me to the AP's webadmin.

I'm out of ideas. I know the router's port forwarding works because I can port forward to the win7box. I know the AP is config'd right because I can reach its webadmin locally from the win7box sibling. However, I cannot remote port forward to the AP webadmin although I've tried every variation that I can think of.

NB. The AP is properly config'd as an AP and works fine serving a wireless network of devices. Help!

***UPDATE*** the router is DIR-826L(FW:1.05) and the AP is DIR-850L(FW:1.12WW)

...and if anyone should ask: accessing the AP via the win7box rdp is NOT a viable long term solution. There are several routers with APs just like this one. The win7box only has access to a couple of the routers, and it must be wired-ethernet connected directly to the router. Please don't suggest continued use via the rdp access. I need to have port forwarded remote access to all the routers and their APs. Thx, in advance for a solution.

Is the 850L in AP mode connected via the WAN or LAN Port to the back of the 826L?

the 850L is in AP mode. This means the dhcp is shut off and the ethernet cable goes from its first LAN port to a LAN port on the 826L router.

Again. I can port forward thru just fine via rdp to the win7box. This makes me think I amdoing the port forwarding correctly on the 826L.
I've set the port forwarding (on the Virtual Server page actually) similarly to reach the AP (the 850L). Again, I'm forwarding the 8531 public port to the <AP-ip>:8080 port. The remote web access is selected, of course. I've tried several ports, including port 80 on the AP.

Is there some funkiness with these routers preventing a remote access? If I can log into the AP from a sibling then it is responding. Why can't I port forward through the router to it?

Accessing any DIR series UI is only allowed via the WAN side for remote access for security reasons. It's not supported if running in AP mode since the connection is made LAN to LAN and remote UI access depends on WAN connections for remote access. Thus, you'll need to use the PC on the LAN side to access the APs UI using the RDP or some other forum of remote access SW like teamviewer for LAN side connections. Sorry.

I read your reply a few times. My first objection was, "but regardless of where the packet comes from it's all headed to the same destination adr and port."

Now, I think your reply is saying that the dlink examines the SOURCE of the ip packet and because it's not local it rejects it? This "security feature" is burned into the firmware with no way to switch it out?

Is there any kind of a device which can update the source of an ip packet? Sure, there's lots of pc based sw (firewall programs, etc.) that can do this, but I don't want to hang a pc off of each router. The problem with using the rdp'd pc at the other end is that there are three routers so I need someone there to plug the win7box into each router that I need accees to. Further, there are more in some distributed locations. ARGH.

Ya, this is how it works. The main intent of the DIR series routers is to act as a main host router and DHCP provider with wireless. When using them in wired AP mode, the features like remote access, Time and features that require the WAN port connection to work are either disabled or wont work as expected due to this kind of configuration and use in AP mode. It's how it's designed. There's no other way I can think of to get around this since the DIR series is not being used in it's primary mode of operation.

Are you using this for a business or for home? If your business, you may want to phone contact D-Link sales and ask them if they have a DAP series product that you can use with a main host router that can provide some remote access to it's web page when needed. Business class APs sometimes have more features for admin and such. Home class APs may or may not provide the configuration for what your looking for.

It's currently a test for something which may or may not go to a business. The current test scenario is to use a low_cost product. Unfortunately, this limitation (where the source ip adr is examined and rejected if not local when sent to the webadmin app) was an unknown factor which messes us up. Thx for the heads up on the DAP series. I'll look into it.
