I purchased a 323 at Christmas in 2008 along with a pair of WD 1 TB drives. I don't babysit it much - if I need it, I turn it on and it may run for a few months before I turn it off. And then it might remain off for a couple of months. I use it for manually backing up photos, etc.

I went to turn it on yesterday and it won't power on at all. When I press the button the disk LEDs will blink blue for a small fraction of a second and then go out. If I press and hold the button, then the disk LEDs will blink blue for a small fraction of a second about once every second. The light around the square button never lights up. The power adapter has a green light lit on it.

If it's helpful, the last time I know it was working was about 2 weeks ago. I added a light fixture to the room where this unit is. I remembered to power down the PC, but not the other items sharing the power strip. Power was killed and restored to the room a few times before I remembered to disconnect the power strip.

I'm looking for advice...
1. Is it obvious enough what failed in the unit where I could attempt to get a spare part and replace it?
2. If no, I have to put together a data migration plan that doesn't assume a working 323. Since I had it configured in RAID1, I should be able to pull drive one or two out and connect it to a PC running an OS that can read the FS, right? Any gotchas here to be aware of?

Can you check the power adapter to make sure it's out putting correct voltages? Look at the sticker on the power block then measure whats coming out of the plug. If nothing at the plug, could be bad power adapter.

Sticker has 4 pins (+12V, +5V, and two returns). 12 pin putting out 12. 5 pin putting out 5. So the adapter checks out...

Then the DNS itself is the problem. You may want to get a hold of Ivan here in the forums an see if there is any help he can provide. If you done the basics, then the unit maybe bad.

D-Link direct does not sell replacement parts for these units. Assuming you can identify the bad component, your best bet is finding a third party resource, possibly even another dead DNS-323 from which to salvage parts.

Assuming for a moment, though, that it truly is dead and I can't do anything to fix it, was I correct that I should be able to pull either drive and connect it to a PC (running an OS that can read the FS) and pull the data?

BTW -- Is it possible the power brick is bad? That's probably the easiest part to replace if you can find a replacement with comparable specifications.

The fact it has correct voltages measured without load is meaningless, it is the voltage measured when the load is applied that matters.  The description of the problem is typical of a power supply that has components that are only just working - usually the driver transistor - and supply enough power to charge the output capacitors to the control voltage but can not sustain that voltage under load - the indicator LEDs light but then go out.

In this case the first thing to do is to find, borrow, another power supply and try that - it is possible to use a dual variable voltage lab power supply but this requires opening the unit to get at the main board and the power connectors.

Got the same problem myself. I took the power supply to work to get it tested.
We discovered that, as Ivan stated, there is enough initial charge but as soon as any load is applied to the power supply the voltage drops to 0V.
We decided it was easy to source a new power supply than repair it.

Update
I sourced a new power supply from aliexpress and the DNS-323 is up and running again. I made sure the output was 5V/3A, 12V/3A
