My Cisco E3000 home router turned 5 years old last week so I decided to buy a new router instead of upgrading my Cable Modem. I looked at professional reviews and it pointed me to the D-Link AC3200 DIR-890L. So I bought one.
H/W Ver A1 F/W Ver 1.03
I installed it. It connects to my Cable Modem Comcast Arris CM820. Created a 2.4 Ghz SSID and a 5.0Ghz SSID (different names and different from the single SSID from the E3000). Security is WPA Personal. Using all other defaults.., 802.11 Mode, Channel, Power, Width. I started changing all the connected devices to connect to the new 2.4Ghz SSID or the 5.0 GHZ if they supported it.
Great connectivity and throughput for all devices EXCEPT for our 2 Smartphones, both Android devices. One is a Galaxy S5, the other is a Galaxy S6. All apps (Facebook, Chrome, Safari, eMail, Twitter, etc.) on both phones load SLOW or timeout. Our phones are consistently slow when accessing the Internet. Throughput is way faster when we turn WiFi off on the phones. No issues with any other devices throughout the house and Garage.
Other devices in home include iPad, 2 laptops running Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, DirecTV, Sony Blu-Ray, Chamberlain Garage Door Status Adapter, Trane Thermostat, PC. And HP Printer. I also have a thumb drive installed in the USB port as well as a WD Storage Device attached to the DIR-890L.
Troubleshooting:
I saw on some support blogs where changing Channels might help. I used WiFi Analyzer to determine better channels (less interference from others I suppose). That didn’t help. I changed Modes… no help. Channel width changes… no help… Etc.
I unplugged DIR-890L and put my old router back in play and the Phones were back to normal. Put DIR-890L back in play, same slowness on Phones. Each time I powered off Cable Modem before continuing.
I added the phones to the HIGHEST and HIGH sections of QoS Engine. That did not help.
I tried adding the phones to the GUEST network except the router seemed to continually re-boot itself making my entire WiFi Network unusable. I stopped working down this avenue early on.
Side-by-Side tests (same exact location in house) between a phone and a laptop show the dramatic differences in throughput/performance.
Help!! I really don’t want to return this router.
