Answering machine : how to know I have new message?

answering machine is a great function, but how can I know if there is any new message recorded?
in user's manual, there is information about where the message is stored. but there is no information how to know there is a new message.

it may work and record messages. callers can leave messages. but highly likely the user will never notice he has messages.

I hope I am missing something and there is a good solution.
