Recently replaced my existing WBR-2310 with a DIR-655.  Am using the DIR-655 (A4/1.21 FW out of the box) in conjunction with a DAP-1522 Wireless N Bridge to stream my Slingbox.  The DIR-655 is in my home office upstairs while the DAP-1522 is downstairs with my DirecTV setup and Slingbox.  I have the DIR-655 configured according to Lycan's sticky topic outlining requirements for a 300mb connection... Wireless N only mode, WPA2 w/ AES cipher and 20/40 Auto Channel.  According to the Wireless Status page in the Dir-655 setup, I've got a 216 mb/s connection with the DAP-1522 at about 90% signal.  The Slingbox streams like a charm.  I'm a bit of a networking novice and got all of this setup correctly on the first try.  I don't want to change any settings or do anything to screw it up!

Problem now though is that I don't have any 802.11g access for my Lenova laptop or my wife's laptop since the DIR-655 is running in "N Only" mode.  Again, I don't want to take the DIR-655 out of "N Only" mode for fear of hurting the Slingbox performance.

Got to thinking... I've not got my old -- still perfectly working -- WBR-2310 lying around now collecting dust.  Is there any way of tying both routers together in some fashion so that the 2310 can provide Wireless G for our laptops while the DIR-655 continues to stream Slingbox video on Wireless N?  If so, how do I share my Comcast Internet cable modem with both routers?

Again, I'm a networking novice here amongst those who know a heckuva lot more about this than myself, so please go easy on me LOL!

I would set the 655 for G and N first, then check your performance.  You may not see any downgrade of your network.    If there is a performance hit then start messing around with adding another box.  The G + N change is the simplest thing to start with and easily set back to N only if you have issues.

Dave... thanks for the reply and recommendation.  Did as you suggested and took a definite performance hit.  Slingbox was streaming in HD across the home network at about 8200 kbps with the DIR-655 set to "802.11n Only".  Switching it to "Mixed N & G" mode decreased the Slingbox streaming to about 2000 kbps.  Had to say goodbye to HD too, as the Slingbox would only stream in Standard Definition in Mixed N & G mode.  Put the DIR-655 back into "802.11n Only" and boom... back to 8000+ kbps and High Definition.

So the mixed mode experiment failed.  Back to looking at a way to incorporate 802.11g with my old WBR-2310 while keeping the DIR-655 in "802.11n Only" mode.  Judging from your initial response, it looks like it's at least possible to tie the two routers together in some fashion.  How would I go about doing this?

Just take the WBR and give it another SSID name. Turn off it's DHCP so it basically just acts as an access point now. So this way your N devices stay on one wireless network and you can do your browsing and basic stuff on the other wireless network. Also make sure they are sitting on different channels.
Would that help you?

Sport... gotcha. That sounds like exactly what I want to do.

A few ???'s... If I setup the WBR to act soley as an access point for my 802.11g devices, should I plug my cable modem into the DIR and then just simply connect the WBR to the DIR with a regular CAT5 cable?  Would that allow both routers to access the internet through the cable modem?  If I have everything setup as you describe, would my 802.11g laptop accessing the WBR be able to talk to my desktop that's connected to the DIR through one of the 655's gigabit ports?

Thanks in advance for replying back on this.
