Fan not working - Can't connect to server
« on: July 26, 2015, 12:20:20 PM »

Good Day  :)

My DNS-320 won't power on and the fan is not working. Both issues happened at the same time, not sure if they are related.

When I push the power button, the server tries to boot up and the power HDD blue light comes on and flashes for a bit before going dark again.

On the back, the network cable light turns green and I can see the device when connected to my lap top but I can't access the server.

Any ideas on how to proceed? DLink does not provide support for this discontinued product so I am on my own...  is it possible the fan has stopped working which is preventing the unit from booting up completely?

What is the easiest way to recover my data if I can't get the DNS-320 started again?

Can you verify the power adapter is working with a multi meter by chance? Take to a friend or electronics shop and check the output voltage.

I am pretty sure the power adapter is working because the unit is receiving power enough to start up and I can see the drive on my network connections plus the network light on the back is green... but I can get the power adapter checked quite easily. I'll get back to you... thanks for you time and help.

Ok, got out the volt meter and tested the power output of the power adapter. It reads between 9 and 10 volts... adapter is rated for 12v.

Can you find another adapter thats got the same rating voltage and amps to test. Those voltages are a bit low,

Sorry but you have an almost dead power supply especially if you are getting less than 12v under no load conditions.

Hard disks have a very small voltage variation allowance for them to work.  You might get them to work with 11v on the 12v line but don't expect reliable operation.  You have only 10v at best - nothing is going to work even if indicator LEDs say otherwise.

Get (borrow for testing - there might be a problem on the NAS MB) a 12v supply that has at least a 4A output (anything less and you have a 60/40% chance of it not working) and it should solve your problem.

Thanks again for the advice folks. I'll work on finding a power adapter and see what happens... stay tuned :-)

So here is what I did to solve my problem.

I purchased a refurbished DNS-320 for $40.00

First I tried the new DNS-320 power supply to the old DNS-320. No change, same problem.

Second, I took the old hard drives out of the old DNS-320 and placed them in the new DNS-320. I can see the server on my network but I can't connect.

Thoughts?

Run the installation cd again or type in the IP address to get access via webgui or did you register previously your 320L with mydlink and if so what happens when you go via mydlink?

From what I understand you can see the drive but not able to access the content - to access my content I need to enter id and password for "mapped drive" or password for webgui or email/password for mydlink (whether the mapped drive login is standard for everyone or just I have it setup differently IDK)

You might factory reset the 1st DNS, manually reload the FW file, factory reset once more then set up from scratch and test.

A couple of thoughts.

Make sure you have a backup of what is on the old drives, you may not be able to read them if the firmware is different between your old and replacement units.

Since you can see the replacement unit on the network you should have its IP address.  Try using a browser with http://<ip-address> in the address bar (<ip-address> is the one from your network scan).  That should get you into the web UI and allow you to check the settings.

Make sure that the replacement unit is setup for the same workgroup as your network (if it isn't then you generally won't be able to connect) and that the IP address is in the same subnet.

You may be lucky and find that you can read the data on the drives when the unit is setup on your network BUT you should also be prepared to format those drives and restore your data from backup should that be necessary.
