Hello forum!

So I just bought a DIR-850L AC1200 router and I'm having some issues with the download speed through the router.
I have a 100Mbps PPPoE connection and I'm testing on a desktop PC with Windows 7 Home (wired connection using the cable provided with the router) and an Xperia Z3 Compact (AC compatible).
After more than 10 tests using the same server on speedtest, my strange results are as follows:

- direct connection to PC (no router): dl: 92Mbps / up: 94Mbps
- wired connection to PC through router: dl: 65Mbps / up: 92Mbps
- WiFi connection to smartphone (one room away): dl: 63Mbps / up: 85Mbps

So first of all, the upload speed seems unaffected, but the download speed is 30% slower through the router and also the wired download speed is almost the same as the WiFi download speed through a wall!!! 

Given the fact that both wired and wireless download speeds seem affected, I'm ruling out a bad cable (from router to PC) and bad configuration and/or drivers.

I have run these tests with the default firmware the router came with, then I upgraded to 2.03 from the router interface and now I'm on version 2.03.B1 downloaded from the website. I have restarted and reset to factory settings several times before and after flashing a new version but the results are exactly the same.

I have also read around 20 topics related to wired or download issues for D-Link routers and have I tried using the same suggestions given on those topics.
- DNS relay is on
- I've tried enabling and disabling Multicast - no change
- I have tried disabling all Firewall options - no change
- I have not fond WISH and WPS settings in the new router interface
- I have tried WAN port setting at 1000 and on Auto - no change
- I have tried manually adding DNS server and keeping everything on Auto - no change

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

• Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS.
• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
• Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
  
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.

After pinging yahoo.com I calculated the the MTU at 1492. How important is to manually set the MTU in the router settings?

On the new interface, the only way to enable QoS seems to be by adding the detected devices in priority slots on the diagram. Since I have no device on the diagram, I suppose all devices are treated equally and QoS is off.

I don't have this option.

Already tried it without any result.

I tried it and it doesn't change anything.

After some more testing, I noticed another interesting thing: for torrent downloads, the download speed through the router on the wired connection is about the same as the download speed on a direct connection (no router): 75-85Mbps through the router and 78-88Mbps for direct connection.

Could there be an explanation for this behavior? On absolutely every website I've tested so far, the download speed is well below the upload speed (between 30% and 70% less), but in "real life" torrent testing, I'm not seeing this download limitation.

Just as an observation, on SOME local servers I'm even getting 88Mbps download and 67Mbps upload with the 5GHz WiFi connection on my Z3 Compact and through a wall, which is crazy good!!![/list]

For cable, 1500 should work. However you might want to ask your ISP to make sure.

And you are not doing any torrent downloads or streaming while speed testing right?

Nope, of course not! 
Actually I just tried a torrent download out of desperation and had that nice surprise.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

Hi! I have the same ISP connection (100Mbps PPPoE) and, of course, had the same problem (850L rev.B1 / 2.03). The solution I found was to change the WAN port speed to 100Mbps instead of AUTO. This setting did the trick for me, now it works as it should and I have wire speed behind the router also. Try it and let me know if it works for you too.

Thanks for posting your experiences. Auto should work however depending upon ISP modem Mfr and model and support of the WAN port connection, most models support either up to 100 or 1000Mb connections. It's recommended to check with the ISP modem Mfr for speed support on modems and then set the router to manual speeds. For my modem, it supports 1000Mb connections so I always set manual 1000Mb on the router.
