I have a Wireless N 150 Bridge/Access Point (DAP-1155) unit that I want to use to provide better wifi coverage to the distant places in my house.

- I tried configuring it to use the Access Point mode, and gave it the same configurations as my wireless router (SSID, security, etc.) and it appeared that there must be a wired ethernet connection between the DAP-1155 and the router for this setup to work, otherwise the two wireless networks will be separate. I can't provide this wired connection. Why can't the two access points communicate wirelessly?

- I tried the bridge mode, but it seems that it only bridges devices connected to the LAN ports of the DAP-1155 to the outer WLAN, which is not what I want.

Are there any other alternatives? Or just I bought the wrong device and should have just bought a repeater?

• What Hardware version is your DAP? Look at the sticker under the DAP.
• Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
• What region are you located?

This model DAP does not support repeating features. You'll need to find a model that supports this feature.

Maybe I won't be able to achieve the repeating functionality strictly as I bought the wrong device, but I just want to achieve good wireless internet coverage in my house without creating a wired connection between the router and the access point.

Need a DAP that supports repeating:

If you want to go this way. You can set up the current DAP for wired connected and use it as a 2ndary AP.

Maybe I'll buy one of this devices if I repeat this setup in another house.
But for now I'm just wondering about the lack of the ability of connecting two APs wirelessly. I saw some people on the internet saying that it can be done but will degrade performance (for example this answer http://superuser.com/a/122508/289696).

Is this something imposed by a standard, or a feature differing from vendor to vendor?

Can be a standard. Most any repeater will degrade some performance since it has to pick up an connect to a wireless signal, take in the data, then re-broadcast a new signal and data.

Is there any way to enable WDS like described here (http://www.wirelessnwifi.com/wds)?
Although the firmware upgrade I did added some new features to the "Advanced wireless" page, but WDS is not of them.

If WDS is not in the features then it's not supported.
