Printing through a DIR-655
« on: September 24, 2015, 09:19:46 AM »

Is it possible to allow a computer to print a document through a DIR-655?

We have an HP laser printer with a cable connected to another computer.  I would like to print something from another computer without having to turn on the computer hard wired to the printer.

I am a novice computer user.  Can I have simple instructions how to do this?

You would need to connect the printer to the DIR-655 if it has LAN networking abilities. If its only a USB connection supported printer, you can install a USB to LAN print server device, connect the USB printer to the print server and then connect the print server to the LAN port on the back of the 655. You'll have to configure the print drivers to point to the print servers IP address. Then anyone can print to the printer with out having to turn on a PC where the printer might be connected. HP has print servers.

I forgot that you can connect a USB printer to the USB port and then install Shareport on each PC and connect to it this way. I prefer using the LAN or print server method as you don't need to install any software:

Thank you.  I am going to try Shareport first and see how that works.  What are disadvantages of Shareport?

You have to install the SW on each PC.
You have to use this SW to connect to the printer each time you want to print.
You have to disconnect from SP if another PC needs to print to the printer.

The printer is not showing up in Shareport.  I looked through troubleshooting and did not find anything.

I wonder if this applies to my printer.

The device server may not support the USB device.
Solution   The device server does not support USB devices which operate using isochronous transfer.  Please confirm that the connected USB device is not an isochronous device.  For details on the USB device's specification, please contact its manufacturer.

Ya I remember something about that. It's been a while.  :-\ I presume your printer may not work with SP on this router.

I recommend you check into HPs JetDirect print servers and get one attached. This will get you set up with printing from any PC.

Could any of these issues apply?

An IP address unable to communicate with your PC may be assigned to the device server.

The IP address assigned to the device server may be in use by another network device.

I really want this to work.

Ok, well you could upgrade to v1.37 and see if it helps:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=54449.0

You'll be stuck at this version as you can't go backwards...Please follow the FW update process to do it if you go for it.

I heard there are issues with the DIR-655 when going to a more updated firmware.

Do I need to update the firmware for Shareport to work?
