DNS-323 can't copy files successfully
« on: July 07, 2009, 03:48:03 PM »

I've just bought the DNS-323 and I'm having a few problems with it.

First some details
Firmware is version 1.07
2 x 1.5TB drives in Raid1 configuration
configured on wireless network as workgroup
static ip address
No users set; no groups set; no access permissions set; no quotas set
visible on network,
XP Pro + SP3
drives mapped...no probs yet.

My wireless router is a zyxel P-660HW-D1,
I have turned off all firewalls and antivirus (just for now) but problem still persists.
My problem is this when I go to copy files (large or small) to the DNS-323, I get an error saying
"cannot copy myfile.???: it is being used by another person or program"
or
"Cannot write data.  The specified network name is no longer available" and I lose network connectivity as the link to the wireless router resets

Any help would be really appreciated...

What type of hard drives are you using? Model #?

When you can not copy the file to device, can you still access the devices web gui?

Do you have the same results on a wired network connection?

The 2 drives are
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA 3Gb/s 1.5-TB Hard Drive
The Web GUI stops working and it does work when wired!

Do you happen to have the Model # of your hard drives as well as the firmware version printed on the drives?

So this issue is only happening when connected wirelessly correct? Do you have multiple wireless PC's you have tried this from or just 1?

I have tested it using a couple of laptops...same story with all of them, I have also shared out folders on the laptops and I can transfer files between the laptops, with no problem....so that should rule out my wireless router...the problem is with the D-Link, I'm sure.

try upgrading to firmware 1.08 beta or downgrading to firmware 1.05 and see if the problem persists or disappears.

Except for the router, I have the same setup that you have; but, I'm not having any problems either.

Before up/downgrading your firmware, check this out...

There's supposed to be a default user named "admin" and a default group named "ALL". User "admin" is hidden and you can't delete it; but, if you want to setup groups, you must first delete group "ALL". I don't remember the details here, but you need it if you don't have any other groups. At any rate...

Create a group named "ALL" (all caps), with all rights and unlimited quota. Save; logout; re-boot. You should then be able to r/w to the NAS.

Good luck.

I tried it wired and it worked!!, are there any recommended settings for it to work wirelessly....?

I think it might be the Router....

Any wireless router should be fine. I would look into a firmware update for your current router maybe.
