FTP affects browsing speed
« on: July 08, 2009, 07:28:44 AM »

Hi There,

Recently, i have people using my FTP to download stuff from my 323. And i realise it affects the
loading of webpages. Is there any way i can let others download, and not affect the network?
I've set the Flow Control to 9 times 10kbs. I'm not sure if that help much.

Anyone experience the same?

That is probably about all you can do. When files are being transfered it does use the CPU of the device so you may see some change in access speeds to web based configuration pages or saving settings.

Hmm so your saying all i can do is to reduce the flow control? Ive now set to 8 times 10kbs and do see some improvement to the browsing speed. But at the same time, that means my users will take a longer time to download the files.

simple math....... if your upload speed is 100k. making the ftp 9x10 is 90k - your max upload 100k is 10k let for you.

basically what im trying to say is make it lower and lower until you like your web browsing speed. and yes it will take longer for the people getting files from you. but hey who is more important?  LOL

another thing you can do is get the dlink dir-655 or any router that has QOS. it will manage this for you once you set it up.(it is the router that my friend has and he loves it)

haha ok i get what your trying to say. So i'll just try to make it lower till i find the browsing speed to
be suitable.

And yes, im using dlink dir 655 and have enabled QOS. Any particular settings that i need to do with that?
I just set it to default and didnt make any changes.

Well, you need have to set the proper priority to use the function's full potential. You need to decide which protocol you will prioritize is it FTP or HTTP?

Since you already adjusted the settings in your DNS, try to match it with the proper priority on your router.

Just a quick question, how many users connect to your FTP? better set the proper settings in the DNS then try to properly prioritize it to your router and see how it goes. :)

I dont know the number of users connect to my ftp. But i guess it's at most one or two. And i've change my flow control to unlimited instead of limiting it since the differnece isnt much.
