Since upgrading to 1.30, I've had to reboot my router weekly, because it freezes somehow. Seems like it only affects address resolving because all file transfer speeds stay normal. Web pages must be refreshed multiple times and the configuration page won't load. Beta versions haven't changed anything.

Which router would accept a lot of connections and remain stable?

One of these.  Don't forget to add the ~$1,250+/mo ISP service charge.   ;D

And if I look at the picture with the 3 fans, I assume you can also use it as air conditioner.

Features will come and go, but problems will always keep popping up.  ;)

I don't really care for new features I would prefer stability especially in a platinum product.

Understandble. Though I think stability is a subjective thing. My 655 is stable like a rock.

The default ones... but

Disable SecureSpot
Enable WPA2
Change Wireless Network to G/N or N only if possible.

Agreed to that, but in every FW!
If they want remove something out.....
If the router restart for some reason it give always a 'busy' channel and skipping ch.1 even if it's free!

why not? I have 1.31, on a A3, and works fine with that option.

You do not need a high end router. Any flavor of the Linksys WRT54G series with the Tomato firmware will do. The default TCP connection limit is 4096. I have personally tested it with over 1000 connections without *ANY* stability problems.

Clearly the 655 was not designed for torrent use.

If thats all you do is torrents thats fine, but you would be hard pressed to find a router with the feature set by default that the Dir 655 has.
Torrents cause nothing but connection problems, I know because I use it also.
