Some questions about the DIR-655
« on: November 04, 2015, 02:45:06 AM »

Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask some questions before I buy a DIR-655, but at the end I found a great deal and ordered one on impulse ;D
So now the decision is done, but the questions are still interesting for me (even though I'll be able to answer them soon):
First, I have a DIR-615 (Rev.D iirc) as a router/gateway, and a DGS-1005D (the very old one) for the internal gigabit network. They both work 24/7 flawlessly, reliably and fast since many-many years. I'm trying to replace the two units with just one. Why? Because why not, I'm bored... :)
The questions are:
1. Is the DIR-655 (it'll be a Rev.C because the shops said it has FW3.0 (I asked for the H/W revision on the box but he missed it with the FW version) at least as reliable as the DIR-615? I read all kind of mixed reviews (w/o mentioning the HW version) from both extremeties. I hear the Rev.C is good but the interior seems to be waaaaay oversimplified/costreduced. :(
2. Will the 655's gigabit LAN switch perform at full speed as now the DGS-1005 does? I need to move large amounts of data around the computers, which I'm currently able to do at ~110-120MB/s (ssd's everywhere). I except nothing less than that.
3. As far as I can tell after reading the manual, the only function what I'll be missing frim the 655 is the ability to forward port ranges to different local port range destinations. (ie. wan ports 10000-11000 to lan ports 20000-21000). The Dir-615 can do that. Is this really not possible with the 655, or was just the FW used in the manual too old?
4. Every manual, including my current 615's, and the 655's too, states, that ip address reservations in dhcp server must be within the dhcp address pool. Yet, I'm using reservations outside that pool and it is working. Will this be working with the 655 too, despite what the manual states?

Thanks for anyone who can provide some answers.
cheers

The router has arrived. To answer my own questions:
1, we'll see how reliable it will be in the long term. I already had some strange issues while upon rebooting the router it was flashing the wan status indicator in orange and the router became completely unreachable/unresponsive and had to be turned off/on.
2, gigabit lan speeds are roughly the same as they were with the separate gigabit switch. it is not bad, i can live with that if it remains so.
3, this indeed does not work anymore, boo. :(
4, this doesn't work either, boo. :(

so far I am slightly disappointed with the firmware. it does need a reboot every single time, even if only a very minor non-critical setting is changed which could be applied on the fly, but no, it will only take effect if the thing is rebooted. very ridiculous.  >:(
also there are some minor bugs in the latest FW.
and thanks dlink for making the power cord a whopping 2 feet long! >:( i could not route the cable in the channels i already have, they had to be bypassed completely. >:(

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Link> Speed Testing Sites
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Upon first setting up any router with a ISP modem to ensure it connects to the modem correctly, I recommend always power cycling the ISP modem, turn OFF for 30 seconds then power ON. After it syncs, power ON the router and then you should get a good connection. I recommend using CAT6 cable between the ISP modem and router always, shortest length possible.

What kind of bugs are you seeing in the FW?
Doing any FW updates please follow this always: Link> >FW Update Process

The cord should be the same length as the other DIR power supply cords, if it's not the same as the others, I recommend you contact D-Link support to get another one. They are 4-5 feet I believe. I can't remember of the top of my head at the moment.  ::)

I've been asked to report status on this.
There's nothing new to report. What I wrote above is still valid. Apart from a few hangs on initila setup, and the slightly inconvenient web interface which always wants to restart, the thing runs very stable sofar. 24/7 ever since, never had to reboot it or anything. So pretty good so far. Let's see how many years will it last.
Rev. C1, with FW 3.02
