DIR-655 Router does not see DNS-323
« on: July 08, 2009, 05:06:23 PM »

My DNS-323 NAS does not show up on the network (DIR-655 Router). It used to work, but when I came back after the week-end, it was powered down and now no longer is accessable.

Here are the Symptoms:

a) The NAS does not show up on the network at all.
b) The Network light is not lit on the 323 but both hard drive lights are.
c) The 323 does not show up as a device on the router's "Status" page when plugged in.
d) The light also is not lit on the router port. I've swapped to a working port with no difference. The working port is no longer lit.
e) The 323 D-Link power-on light flashes when turned on for a minute or so, then is steady.
f) The 323 Does not respond to pinging

Attempted Solutions:

1. changing the network cable
2. shutting the nas down, waiting 30 sec or more and restarting
3. shut down the router and restarted after 30 seconds or more.
4. switched out the router and it wasn't seen on the other router.
5. tried to see it using a crossover cable

Your input and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

TIA.

mbooth,

Greetings. First, let me point out that I'm pretty new here... But, I'm gonna jump in anyhow. (Even so, I'd suggest you wait for a couple of more experienced DNS-323 users to come in and follow-up.)

Based on what you said, I have a couple of thoughts...

1. Since your NAS is shutting down ports on your router, it's NIC port is probably "spewing" and the router is smart enough to shut it down. (I am assuming the router ports you referenced above are coming back after a reset?)

2. If (since) you can't get to your NAS admin utility, then you're gonna have to do a hard reset on the NAS (via the little pin-hole button on the back). NOTE: This is not supposed to affect the data on your HDD(s)... just reset the NAS to factory defaults. I suggest you A) first, unplug the NIC cable, B) then, press and hold the factory reset button and wait for it to do it's thing. After that, you may want to shut it down, unplug the PWR CBL, wait a minute, and back on... two times... before you plug the NIC cable back in and try to get into the admin utility.

If your router's port shutdown problem goes away, then you lucked up.  ;D

If the NAS is still shutting down the router's ports, then you probably got spiked.  :-\

It sounds like an RMA unit if you are still in warranty. As soon as the intial power up sequence is done (only takes a few seconds), the unit will light all hardware connections, drives, network. If the network light is NOT on while the unit is powering up, then either the port is out or the cable. If you have already checked cables and ports on the router, that only leaves one thing, the nas port. You can try resetting the unit, but note that an indicator light should show no matter the settings of the unit.

Out of curiosity, have you added anything to your setup such as a surge protector with a RJ-45 (ethernet) surge protection port?  I recently had an experience with my DIR-655 and DNS-323 where a cyberpower ups with RJ-45 surge protection suddenly made everything grind to a halt - changing out cables didn't help, there was no light on either device showing network activity or connection.
