DIR 655 settings for an iTouch 2G 3.0
« on: July 09, 2009, 08:35:18 AM »

I am sorry if this is an old topic, I used the search engine and I didn't find anything specific for what I need.  I had my itouch 2G 3.0 working just fine with the wifi on my DIR-655.  I had to resent the itouch and now I can't get it to connect no matter what I try.  When I go it working before I am not really sure what I did to get it to work. It is not the 655, it is getting the itouch to hook up with it. I found out belatedly that the DIR-655 will store in a file all of your current settings, wish I had known about this before.  Can anyone help me.  ???  With all of these devices floating around you would think somebody would have come up with a setup wizard for the iTouch. The instructions in the manual for the iTouch are sure no help. .  I am no spring chicken when it comes to PC's but I am a noob with anything Apple, this iTouch is the first Apple product I have owned since the Apple II computer I had back in the stoned age. :)

Thanks

The D-link has Firmware Version: 1.21
I  have a ASUS M2N4-SLI mobo
AMD 64X2-5400
4gig's DDR2 Ram
XP Pro SP3

I can give you a basic rundown of what to do as i have both the router and itouch 2G with 3.0 firmware. One thing you might want to include before hand is if you have a encryption on your wireless network(a password) and also if your SSID is visible or hidden.

If you have no password simply go to settings on the itouch, tap the wifi button, make sure it says wifi ON and choose your network by the name in the list. If you have a password follow the same steps but it will ask you to type in your password when you click on the network. If your SSID is hidden you must hit 'Other' and manually type in your SSID, choose your encryption and then type in your password.

Also you can manually type in the IP address, subnet, gateway, etc for the ipod if you hit the little blue arrow next to the networks name in the list.

Like i said this is a basic rundown and without knowing if you have any other advanced settings on your router this is as much as i can help.

What do you mean you can't connect to it?  Are you getting an error.

I don't have a touch, I just have an iphone.

Have you tried this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

Configuring WIFI is pretty easy on the touch/iphone.  Just go to settings -> WIFI, makue sure wifi is on.  It will search for the networks, then you just click on the one you want to connect to and it will ask for the password.

So please be more clear about why you can't connect.  Does it just hang?  Do you get an error?  etc.

I have a Ipod Touch FW2.2 and yes it's a bit Touchy to get it working (again).
I'll renember the very first try and I've got only NOT connected (in the semi auto mode).
Only in the manual mode what I try say is let the Touch not try to resolve the WIFI SIDD but do everything manual
only by that I got it to work!

As long as I don't have any of the encryption features enabled I can hook up just fine.  The problem I have is when I have the WPA security enabled the touch can find the 655 but it asks for an access code the problem I have is where do I input this access code when I am in the wireless setup on the DIR-655.  I see several places to input such a code but it is unclear to me at least which place I need to input it.  I have hooked the iTouch directly to the router using the usb flash setup and doing this the 655 does see the itouch and I can configure some of the setting but I still have the access code problem, once I figured out this detail I will be home free.  :D  Oh and thanks for the support link to Apple this is useful information.

I finally figured it out. this is one of those times that even though I have been using, building, programing, and utterly destroying computers for over 35 years I feel like a dope.  It turns out the access code on the itouch was the encryption key setting on the 655.  this is one of those cases of a PC environment not exactly matching up with the Apple environment.  Of course Apple has always had the "our way or the highway" mindset so this is not surprising.  Bottom line is it is now working so I can get supremely decadent and and stretch out on my bed with my three Irish terriers in the same mode and do the wifi thing.  ;D
The Apple support link was a big help thanks.
