intermittent internet slowness 1.31 Firmware
« on: July 10, 2009, 12:56:42 PM »

I am using Vonage Phone service and have the Vonage V-Portal connected to the WAN port on the DIR-655 I am now thinking of connecting the V-Portal to one of the switch ports on the DLink Dir-655 router instead of to the WAN port. The reason I am thinking this is because I am getting intermittent internet slowness. At time I get 5 - 10% packet loss and at other times no packet loss. The phone seems to work great.

I am not sure if this is related to the firmware 1.31 or not.

Also, I get 19.5down and 0.35 - 0.37 upload
Might this solve my issue?

Thanks,

Michael Houser

This should work fine, you may need to assign the vonage device to the DMZ ip or forward any relevant ports (I would only worry about doing this if your phone doesn't work after the switch).

No this wont work. The vonage device is designed to send the VOIP data out of it's WAN port.

Lycan,
I think this person is saying his current setup is DSL/Cable modem > Vonage device > D-Link router and he wants to change it to DSL/Cable modem > D-Link router > Vonage device... at least this is the way I read his post. The first method is the way that Vonage asks people to connect their devices, http://www.vonage.com/support.php?article=1287&topic=5

I know from previous experience that these Vonage devices can cause all sorts of issues with home networking, especially packet loss and slow speeds (connecting the Vonage router to the regular switch ports on your router may very well fix this).

Thanks for the replies.

I was able to get the vonage v-portal into the DMZ but am unsure of the setup.

Here is what I did:

Cable Modem (Blue Cable) in to the WAN on the Dlink
Vonage V-Portal WAN port (Yellow cable) into port 1 on the Dlink DIR-655
Vonage V-Portal Network port no cable

Am I correct in this wiring? This setup seems to work
When Road Runner was out at my house they did this setup:

Cable Modem (Blue Cable) in to the WAN on the Dlink
Vonage V-Portal Network port (Yellow cable) into port 1 on the Dlink DIR-655
Vonage V-Portal WAN port no cable

Both setups worked for some reason.

As long as it works fine, it's fine :) All I can guess (about both setups working) is that the WAN and LAN portions of the vonage device are bridged, if that's the case it really shouldn't matter if the connection from your router is going to the WAN port on the V-portal or to the network port on the V-portal. Also, the TWC technician setting it up like that (and it working), was probably just dumb luck on his part  :) Are your internet speeds or packet loss any better?

mhouser I also have Vonage and I did the same. Although I had to assign a static ip to the V-portal. Your Dir 655 has the address of 192.168.0.1, give your V-Portal the address of 192.168.0.(2-99) choose a number between 2&99and let DHCP control the rest of your network. I have alot of traffic on my home network and Qos just was not enough to stop the lag in audio(cutting out). Still @ times I have lag if I'm running torrents. It's not perfect but you have to find a happy medium with your bandwith usage or you will have this lag.

cmk1198,

No packet loss with this setup and internet seems to be a little better.

jason1722x,

I glad to know someone else has the same setup.

The Tech I talked to at Vonage suggested I set up this way. A few calls I made yesterday dropped completely. I called vonage and they say it is TWC dropping the connection for some reason restarting the Dir-655 and Vportal. Vonage thinks it might be related to their equipment and is going to issue a RMA.

I was able to connect my DIR-655 to the modem with out the Vportal with no problems.

Well the bad thing for me was I signed up for Vonage @ the same time I updated to fw 1.31NA. So for about a week I wasn't sure what was going on, because of the issues with the fw.

jason1722x,

I thought it was a fw issue I have 1.31 as well. What I did was to take the Dir-655 out of the picture and I had the same audio dropping problem. I can't be sure it was a problem with the fw. I did a re-flash of the fw both before and after the fw flash I did a reset back to factory defaults. I am waiting for a replacement V-portal from vonage and don't have the old V-portal hooked up right now. I am using just the Modem-->Dlink--> wireless connection everything seems to be ok. Knock on wood. I will post back when I get the new V-Portal.

Its been 4 days and phone seems to be ok (no dropped calls) but still have internet slowness. I think it might be a TWC issue.

You could do a couple things, update to fw1.32 as it is final now, also use 192.168.100.1 to access the surfboard cable modem and reboot it.

jason1722x,

I did a reset of the cable modem and things seem to be better (for now) I think I'll wait on the fw 1.32 update for now.

I added 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 to the DNS (then using TWC's servers) on my mac things seem to be faster now.

a heads up, i denno about this information but just reading that you have firmware 1.31..... the new firmware is more stable, so if you have reboots or lock ups, its best to update to firmware 1.32. Its more stable than 1.31, but it still has its glitches.... that my opinion. well best of luck with that problem. :)
