Hello there,

I hope you might be able to help me with this. I recently bought DIR-605L N300 Cloud Router and I like it quite a lot. However I'm having a small issue.

When connected via LAN, my internet speed would be around 40 Mbp/s. When I am connected via WiFi, my speed is 28 Mbp/s no matter how far/close I am to the router. Second floor - 28 Mbp/s, First floor - 28 Mbp/s, 2 feet away from the router - 28 Mbp/s. 10 feet away - same 28 mbps.

I live in a sort of a suburb neighborhood and there's not more than 1-2 other networks visible around me so noise is not an issue.

I've configured the router to use a wide 40 Mhz channels, and have ensured the channel picked is as far away as possible from the other networks' channels. 20/40 Hz co-exist disabled. WPA2 AES PSK encryption. Wireless mode is Wireless Router. 100% Transmission speed. Enhanced Wireless option turned on. Wireless mode "n" only.

The max connection speed as detected by my laptop is 300 mbs (checking from the WiFi connection in Windows).

Firmware is up to date.

Do you have any clue as to why a 300 mbps router can't utilize at least 90% of my internet's bandwidth?

Hello,

Actually yes. After waiting for quite some time I got a response back from Support who suggest I update the firmware. They gave me a set of steps to follow. The problem is now gone and I have 98% of my LAN speed up in the WIFI signal. Out of 50, I get 48 Mbps on the second floor.

Notes:

- I had initially followed the Firmware Update process directly from the Router's admin page. For some reason, the firmware I got from there was not the same as the one I was directed to by support. The support instructions directed me to a slightly different page where I got a newer version of the Firmware. After installing it though LAN on the router it got up to full speed. Funny how 2 official channels of the same company (2 firmware update directories etc.) can yield totally different results for the same product.

- After installing the new Firmware I imported my router settings I have previously saved. It reduced the router's speed back to the 28 Mbps it was stuck on before. This was not caused by my personal settings, because with the old firmware it wouldn't work even after a master Reset, but I suppose it carries some of the bugs with it. So do not import settings - just replicate them and it will work.

Hello,

Need to revive this.

After upgrading my internet connection I was able to better identify the problem I am facing. WiFi speed is 3 times lower than what I have available unless I restart the router. After restart I make use of the majority of the bandwidth, but after an hour or so it drops back down and needs a restart.

So what causes the speed drop and how can it be avoided? Firmware obviously doesn't fix that sadly

Try setting 20Mhz channel width and test.
What ISP speed do you have now?

Any other Wifi neighbors near by? How many?

Hi there,

I've done tests with both 20 and 40 mhz channels. Nothing changes. Speed is high the first 1 hour and then router needs a restart or it stays low.

There's 4 networks besides mine near me. All except 1 have -80/-90 RSSI. The remaining one has high RSSI but it's on the channel furthest away from me.

What FW version is currently loaded? Latest from Jul 2015, Downloaded from DLink Product Support page.
What wireless modes and channels is currently being used?  Mode: Wireless router; Channel: 11 (or 11+7 or whatever the 40 mhz combo was)
Any other electronic equipment near by?  No.
How is the router placed? On a wall (back flat against the wall, antennas upright and parallel)
How many wireless and wired devices do you have connected at once? 2 (laptop and smartphone)

Can you confirm the FW version # and your region your located in?

One think you might try, remove the router from it's wall location and then place on a desktop or wooden table. These get hot sometimes and I'm wondering if there maybe a heat problem. Do you have a laptop cooler handy by chance?

I will confirm the Verison a bit later after I get home.

To the heat suggestion - that was something that the IT from the company I work in also suggested. I took the top cover of the router off and stuck a copper heat sink on to the CPU with some thermal paste. I left it on throughout the whole night last night, with the cover off. When I woke up I had 15 Mbps download speed on the speedtest. After a reboot it went up to 65 Mbps again. So I suppose we can eliminate that. The only thing I haven't tried yet is putting heat sin on the other chip (the smallest one of the three), but I'm told that is not relevant. Still I can try.

I read on some forum via google search that this may have to do with bad RAM management and that OpenWRT firmware might solve it for most people, but it seems this router model isn't supported by OpenWRT.

Let us know the version you have loaded.
I'd like to have you do a factory reset, manual reload of current or newer FW, factory reset then set up from scratch and test again.

If it still happens, possible that the unit is faulty and needs to be replaced.

One question though - Sticker on the back of the router says Revision B2. Chipset model also matches Wiki for Rev B2. However it says Rev-A1 on the actual board, close to where the chipset is. I guess we stick to Rev B2 right?
