Cannot map network drive - password
« on: February 28, 2016, 02:32:11 AM »

When trying to map my DNS-320L volumes as network drives (or even open them with windows explorer), it keeps askin for a "network password". I have seen this question many times before, but no working solution. The notebook computer running win7pro is on the same LAN with NAS. Another desktop desktop win7ultimate pc on the same LAN, maps and opens the DNS volumes without asking for password. I checked the win network settings on both computers and they are the same. Any suggestions?

How does the notebook connect to the LAN, wired or WiFi?  If WiFi have you used the correct password for that connection?

Both computers are connected through the same wifi. The desktop does not ask for a password to map or open the NAS. The notebook does. In windows explorer/Network I can see the Dlink NAS, when asked for the password, if I put the DNS320L admin password, than I can see the volumes (I have 2 HDD inside). When I try to open/map either volume, it asks again for password. This time the admin pasword is not accepted. It returns "\\DLINK-04516B\Volume_1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server ... etc"

What do you mean "password for that connection"?

"password for that connection" - the password you need to connect to the WiFi.  We have seen people being in notebooks complaining that they can't connect to something at home when they can connect at the coffee shop only to find that they haven't logged on to their password protected home WiFi.  Since you are logged on that does not apply in your case.

With the extra information you give it sounds as if someone logged on to the NAS at some time and ticked the 'remember password' box when requested for user/password both with initial logon and when logging on to the individual drives (the second part assumes that a user and password has been set for each individual volume - Volume_1 and Volume_2).  You need to provide the user/password set for the user of each volume when asked.

I have had this as well.  You need to check your credentials within windows.  I an using Win 10 so I go to start and left click (or right).  You want the older directory finder.  From this select control panel. In search control panel type "credential" excluding the "".  The select credential manager. Now you may get an error at this point. Click on ok to ignore it.   Next select Windows Credentials not the web one. Ylu are now looking for your router details on the list.  delete all instances of that server only nothing else or you are in deep dodo.  Next in the top section Windows Credentials (not certificate nor generic) click on "add a windows credential."  In here type \\servername\folder directory\.  So server may be DNS320L.  The add the user id and password for admin.  The add another credential for any users.  On mine vol1 is my personal drive.  Vol2 is other half.   But admin has one as well for both drives.  next log back into your router. first logon in as admin and password.  Don't tick the box to re-enter credentials each time but do tick save credentials.  Do this for the next user as well. Hey presto after about 5 minutes under your network items your NAS appears.  If you are using CC Cleaner be careful as it removes something from your PC and makes you renter this all again. Hope this helps.
