1st time NAS user needs help on DNS-327L
« on: March 24, 2016, 09:33:30 AM »

Hi all,

I bought a NAS from Dlink dns-327L for general purpose of sharing photos, video clips and files. I use the wizard to setup the 327L. It connect to my asus router AC-87U.

Although I setup LAN, DDNS & port forwarding at network management and a multiple user in the "account manager". FTP server is enable also. I have not been able to access when used ftp. Did I miss something?   ???

Need some advise, thanks.

OK basics (but please remember I only have a 320L but I believe everything works the same)

You set up Dynamic DNS with one of those listed in the drop down menu on the Dynamic DNS and enabled it?
Can you also access the same address via web browser?  if yes continue
Download and install FileZilla Client and use the same settings as you used via web browser - did it connect?  If no FileZila will give a reason why it failed and from that info we can probably help more (hopefully).

Also have you Mapped the NAS as a network drive in your OS?

Yes, I have registered a DDNS. Within the wi-fi range I can access the 327L through LAN. I'm not real familiar the command, alright for the within network I just key "ftp:// xxxx dlinkddns.com:xxport" to browser and prompted the user & password. but after login, I can't see the 327L content. Is it normal? I yet to try login from external, will install app on my mobile phone to try out.

I tried with my laptop connected to my 3G dongle and used firefox and IE not able to access. the command I used was "ftp://xxxxxdlinkddns.com:<port number>. It prompted login of username & password; to my surprise it did not accept the info I key in. It shall be the DDNS info when I 1st login to create a username & password.. Did I miss something?  ???

** update: I think my 327L somehow it did not refresh itself so I guess the DDNS failed and refused any remote login. After I rebooted the 327L, my laptop is able to ftp from the folders of 327L by IE or firefox.

To log in to your NAS on your LOCAL (in house) network you just need a FTP client like FileZilla.  You can also use CIFS/SMB to access files and folders from windows explorer --> network.

You only need the dlinkddns if you want to login to your NAS from some remote location via the internet.

I use "Total commander" for ftp. Found this app is much easy to use than others.

Although my ftp is working now. Any idea how to allow family members to login certain folders? I want their access limited to read only. Does anyone has tried this before? Although I set a groups' right to access, but not sure how to use app to login. I don expect them to use ftp commands. Anyone can share?  ;D

Simplest way IMHO is to have one user with a good strong password that can read only and add allow access to all your media folders

If you then want a specific user to have access to read/write create that separately

Hi philphil61,

I have created family and guest groups; family can read/write, guest only read. I set 2 different password for each group but don't know how to use app to access. I don't want them to use ftp so is any other way to access these groups?

I assume you are talking about the myDLink apps?   https://www.mydlink.com/apps

If yes...complete waste of time because they will need your email and password AFAIK

FTP is fine so long as you trust your family with write.  They should be able to login with the accounts you've assigned (I think)  If on LAN only use ESFileExplorer - Network - search for devices - add NAS - add id and password and save details

Again - if you are only sharing media (movies/muic/photos) I'd go with Kodi installed and access via DynamicDNS then it wouldn't matter if LAN or half way around the world.

I know you are new to DLink NAS and I will offer as much advice as I can - I was in your shoes 2 years ago and it was a real pain

Thx philphil61  :D

Because not only family members but some close friends, so I don't want them to mess around my photos, videos & files. You mentioned the "kodi"app, I'll try it out.   :D
