DIR 655 incompatible gateway settings & captcha hating
« on: July 14, 2009, 10:29:51 AM »

I just upgraded the firmware on my DIR655 router (from 1.21 to 1.31).  Before doing so, I saved the settings.  I put many hours into customizing the settings for the network including wireless security a guest zone, port forwarding, virtual servers, Dynamic DNS, QOS and WISH.

After the upgrade, the settings were cleared and I am unable to load previous configuration (saved a few minutes beforehand).  Is there a tool to convert these settings?  The website says rollback is not possible.  So please give me an option to get my configuration working again.

On another topic, I believe the CAPTCHA in the new firmware is horrible and offers minuscule additional security in proportion to the aggravation it causes.  Consider taking this "feature" out in the next firmware version.  Or at least give the user the ability to toggle it off.

Mind if I ask what browser you use? Also, Captcha toggle is built in.

Go to the Tools > Admin page, uncheck Enable Graphical Authentication.  No more Captcha.

Thanks for the info on the captcha.  I havent had a chance to fully explore all the new settings (most of the time I remote in to the router as I am currently not at its physical location)

As far as the browser goes, firefox 2.5 or 3.  Again I was only able to do a quick diagnosis as I usually remote in.

I will try it again with IE 6

Speaking from MY experience only, I used IE7 and "upgraded" to IE8 and have been able to successfully import saved configurations from revisions 1.21 on up. I don't see why IE6 would not work. If you consider installing IE8, you'll be pleased with all of the bloat-ware they foist upon you when they think you aren't looking. It's supposed to "enhance" your Windows experience. I was so enhanced I had to uninstall all but the browser.

IE8 has compatiblity mode that negates the need for IE6. Try it out.

MorbidBBQ, there might be hope to roll back. See my post here : http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5716.msg38899#msg38899 for my method on the DIR 615.

That's awesome! Anyone tried it yet on a 655? ;) I definitely don't have the cash on hand to potentially brick my router.
