My house has outdoor power outlets that are in weatherproof enclosures. Unfortunetly, DLink made a HUGE design blunder.....the AC adapter is too wide to fit inside the enclosure (and most outlet weatherproof enclosures).

What is the easiest way of solving this? Is there a smaller version of the AC adapter?

I don't believe there is a different power solution. Can you find a short extension cable between the outlet and the power adapter to help make it fit? You can wrap the end up and weatherize the extension with some plasitc wrappings and tape as a suggestion.

I can use a weatherproof extension cable.....but is the camera AC adapter weatherproof? The connection between the extension cable and the AC adapter would be outside the power outlet enclosure.

Thats the portion that you would have to weatherize is the power adapter connection to the extension cable.

I can buy a gasket to seal the "connection" point between the extension cord and the power adapter.


But do you know if the power adapter itself is weatherproof? Like can water go inside the power adapter housing/enclosure?

I don't know for sure if the adapter is fully weather proof. You might contact D-Link on the phone and ask them about this. Most adapters are sealed well and can't be opened.

I would recommend some form of weather proofing that surrounds the adapter and the extension cable end so that water and moisture can't get in.

I've had mine outside on my balcony, but it would rarely get water where it is located.  Maybe heading towards 2 years now. Doesn't look/feel it.  I haven't looked at outdoor lights or Xmas lights in a long time to compare.

I assume you are in the US?  If so, the issue isn't really that it won't fit inside a weatherproof outlet housing, but rather that the plug is oriented such that the adapter sits with the long side to the horizontal when plugged in.  If it were oriented vertically, it would fit in your housing.

So, you might look at adapters that rotate the orientation of your outlet so the adapter will fit.  You could also just employ a short pigtail like this one and try to shove the whole works inside the outlet cover.  Presumably you have at least one other outlet in this box and you'll lose the use of it doing this, but then that seems likely either way.
