Wireless Video Streaming?
« on: July 15, 2009, 08:29:06 PM »

I am a NAS noob, having just received a 321 as a gift.  I had no problems setting the unit up and intend to use it primarily as safe/redundant file storage, but am very interested in the media streaming capabilities.  My setup includes a Linksys WRT54G router and a laptop.  I have enabled the iTunes server and have had no problems streaming my music library wirelessly.  Video either through the upnp server or opening a file on the 321 directly from any media player is essentially unwatchable (choppy, stuttering etc) when wireless, but appears to work just fine (after limited testing) when wired.  After doing some reading on this fine forum, I am under the impression that wireless simply isn't a good idea - but is it feasible?

It is going to always depend on the type of video file. Depending on the distance from the router and the fact that you are running 802.11g, your network throughput over wireless is going to be horrible. 802.11n has less issues, but still some depending on video quality.

I actually sorted things out by modifying a few advanced seemingly performance-based settings on my Dell wireless card, so I'm a happy camper.
