Please help! Can't get on the internet at all
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:16:10 PM »

I just bought this router and found out from my friends to update it to the new firmware that was out (on the dlink website). I couldn't get the router to work in the first place, so I decided to see if the firmware update would work, but it didn't. I have a Linksys wrt160N that connects just fine to the internet (what i'm using right now as I write this) but when I hook up the dir655, nothing. I know the modem is fine, it's just the router. I am using comcast as my ISP and haven't had any problems with this yet. i've tried looking up a few other posts to see if anything would help, but after reading a few of them, nothing. Please let me know if you can help me with anything. Thanks.

You might consider configuring the router? It does not always run out-of-the-box ...

Look through the manual to set it up according to your ISP's connection.

I've tried configuring it to all of the possibilities it could be. I've done the quick setup like 3 times, tried calling dlink, and nothing. I tried unplugging my modem for 30 minutes, and that didn't do anything. I will probably call dlink in the morning to see what they have to say about my dilemma.

You are not explaining what sort of ISP connection you have, so we cannot help you with the configuration...

I believe Comcast is a cable connection.

I believe Comcast is a cable connection.

It is, I was using my DIR-655 on Comcast.

As far as I know, there is nothing that needs to be configured to get it to work.  Comcast doesn't use mac address requirements or anything, atleast in my area.

It should be as simple as:

1) Unplug Modem and Router from power
2) Plug in modem, wait for modem to connect (all lights solid)
3) Plugin in router

So you status page on the router just shows nothing?  ANything in the logs?

Do you get anything in the status page? If you are getting a APIPA address (169.254.0.1 through 169.254.255.254) something is not working right.

Try unplugging the router and modem and let them sit for 1 hr. Then plug in the modem and then the router

I had the same problem with Comcast when I changed routers. Comcast logs the MAC address of both your modem and router.

In your DIR-655's configuration, go to Setup>Internet>Manual Internet Connection Setup>MAC Address. Enter the MAC address of your WRT160N and save settings.

That should fix it.

So I FINALLY got it to work! YAY! I am now using my DIR-655 and love it! Since you all took the time to help me out, let me at least fill you in on what I did.

After trying everything I could think of, I finally broke down and called D-link. The service sucked, but there was one thing that the person told me to do that I hadn't thought of. Apparently my modem has a backup battery and everytime I would unplug it, it would just use the power off of the battery. The reason for the battery was to save the ISP settings in case of a power outage. So I unplugged the backup battery, waited half an hour (probably longer than I needed to), plugged it back in, and ran the quick internet connection setup on the 192.168.0.1 page. Once it finished, it recognized the modem, jumped on the internet, and too bad you guys can't see it but i have the biggest grin on right now! Finally after hours of figuring it out we all got it to work. So, if anybody else has a problem similar to this, check and see if your modem has a backup battery, because that might save you a headache, 4 liters of mountain dew, and a whole lot of time. Thanks everybody!

Do you also have Digital Phone?  The battery is normally used when you have the digital phone so that you don't lose phone connection if the power goes out.

Comcast in my area only logs the modem I think.  When I switched to the 825, I don't remember doing anyhting with its mac address.

If you had disconnected the power to the modem before installing the router you wouldn't have.

True, I had that step in my instructions of above.  I guess I was thinking in terms of registering and actually calling them up, which is what you need to do with the modem.
