Qos setup in the switch router, and phone system
« on: July 16, 2009, 08:35:08 AM »

Hi,

Is there any information, document, regarding QOS setup in switches, routers to work with the phone system.

I have a managed switch is able to setup priority for every DSCP value, from 0 to 63, does inbound and outbound voice packet in/out the phone system already taged DSCP value?

Thanks

The system uses SIP as it's protocols, those are what you would need to configure in your switches and routers for QOS.

Just to make sure that you understand QOS, even if you mark something as a higher priority all routers and switches still treat all traffic on a first in first out basis.  The ONLY time QOS comes in to play is when a network device deems itself saturated.  Once saturated, then the QOS policy kicks in, and that will only last until the network is no longer saturated, that could be just a few seconds or minutes.

QOS was really developed for slower WAN links, not your 100MB or 1GB local network.  If you have or are worried about local network problems, then you should investigate improving your local network.  If you are using WAN links, then QOS only works over private links, not internet links.  QOS does not work on the Internet.

Good luck.
