I am trying to figure how to download video from hard disk dnr-322L using my laptop from a remote location. It works OK at home on the same network but how do I do it from another location, the IP address is different.

You need to know your external IP Address. Log in to your router and look for it in there.
OR you could google "what is my IP address" and they will tell you.

But the thing is - you will probably still need to log into your router and set up port forwarding.

Which router are you using?

Please remember that I only know/have experience with 320L (I'm assuming things will be similar for 322L)

Forget the MyDlink Apps - is my first advice (even if you've never tried them)

Look at FTP via Filezilla together with/or setting up DLink Dynamic DNS www.dlinkddns.com< this is your best option

With DLink Dynamic DNS you'll get a website address access to your "shared folders"
FTP with Filezilla makes the function/access much simpler IMO

I am using a Dlink DIR-879 router.
The only problem I am finding is when you log into the router the screen is not the usual orange top page menu but a white your on your own setup screen. I am a little concerned by port forwarding, in case I somehow cause easy access for a hacker. I think I go to port forwarding/add rules/ external port 5150, internal port 5160, or is it the other way around. Is the live streaming port = to external port, playback port= internal port.

I originally chose Dlink system thinking it would be an easy system to set up. I am still having problems with java and all the rigamarole with win 10 and internet browsers. Some work on my desktop but not on my laptop both on win 10.

I will have to look into the Dynamic DNS system whether the $60 a year is worth it or figure out how the server side of the DNR322L works.

I though I had solved the problem by login onto Dlinkddns.com  but I could only access from my own network, not on anybody else. Went to Starbuck for wifi could access login page but kept timing out when I tried to login.

Does anybody know of a better system than Dlink I can look at, I have a used dlink system to get rid of.

What ISP Mfr and model do you have?

After spending over 2 hours with tech support, we finally got it working by port forwarding. The Dynamic DNS status is still showing failure to connect, I was told not to worry about that , they would put in a ticket to figure that out ! possible a software problem ! Also my Dlink DIR-879 router Dynamic DNS also shows disconnected. They had screen view so they checked all the settings. I was a little concerned when I was put on hold multiple time for them to check on what to do. Even when I showed the conflicting setting from UK Dlink set up sheet. These settings were finally used.

So as of today it is sort of working for what I need, but hope I have not left myself open for security problems. Dlink seem to want to help but the whole system seems a little flaky. There must be a better way.
