Authenticating on the DNS-323
« on: July 16, 2009, 08:58:59 AM »

I used Vista 64bit (and have been playing with Windows 7 64 bit) and when ever I attempt to authenticate to the NAS it keeps rejecting it for some reason.  I checked the groups, users, and access control and I SHOULD be able to log in but when I try to map to it (without the DLINK software) it doesn't like how I sign in.  I think it authenticates similar to a Unix box (have no clue when dealing with Unix).

The name I have for the NAS is called "STORAGE"

I enter STORAGE\username then the password.

I've tried STORAGE/username;
             STORAGE\username;
             /username
             \username

It still doesn't like it.

Any suggestions?  I've seen the suggestions for adding it to a domain but I would have to use debian(?) or the fun_plug(?) which I'm not exactly comfortable using as I'm a little ignorant when it comes to hacking the box ...

I would appreciate any help available.  Or is there maybe a fun_plug for dummies somewhere?

The DNS-323 does not support domain network configurations this feature is currently only available with the DNS-343. So other words to do this properly you would need to load a hack.

I have this problem all the time on Windows 7 and the fix for me is so simple.

Put a backslash in front of your username:

\username

In my case it didn't matter if I chose the "save credentials" checkbox, I always have to specify them.

Dlink:  Are you guys evaluating samba 3.4 (the samba3 branch) - in the release notes they have modified the way untusted domain names are handled during authentication.  This could be useful for when Win7 is release as well as Vista compatiblity.

Windows 7 is EXACTLY what ive been testing the 323 on.  It still seems to not like it with just the '\username' for some reason.

What is the UNC you are using to access a specific folder?

I've seen some people actually use 'volume_1' in the UNC and I've seen (and used the UNC) with just the share name in it.

I'm looking to make the folders persisent on the home workgroup.  any suggestions?

To answer that, you need to know:

All of my computers & the DNS-323 share the same workgroup name.  The DNS-323 is named "bigbox".

On my Windows 7 machine the mapping is \\bigbox\Volume_1

My last post shows an example of the username and how I use it.  I'm quite sure if you exchanged the samba name of your DNS-323 for its IP address, that would work as well.

The "Volume_1" is apparently the ticket ... i was just trying to map to the share I created ...

Thanks a bunch!
