Should I switch routers?
« on: July 16, 2009, 10:06:31 AM »

I know that nothing is perfect, that is why I am asking the question here. I have the DIR-825 and am having alot of problems with it. As I hav mentioned in posts on that part of the forum (DIR-825). I have a couple of days left on the 30 day return policy and was considering getting the DIR-655. Is this a downgrade? Is the 655 having the same issues that the 825 is with the bad firmware? What will my drawback be with switching over?

What are your problems?

The problems that you are having can also occur with any other router.

Low signal levels, had to use DMZ to get my voip fax machine to work, loose connection both wireless and wired every day a couple of times, especially if I am doing some heavy downloading. There are other problems that I can't think of right now, but they all seem to be the same problems people are having with their 825's after the firmware upgrade.

What firmware are you running on the 825?  I have a 825 that has an uptime of 25 days so far with no issues.  But I am running the original 1.01.

My 655 running 1.31 had max 4-5 day update (unless i turned off dns relay) and a ton of other issues that I don't have in the 825.

If you are running 1.11 on the 8.25, I would try returning it for another 825 running 1.01 (Revision A, Revision B isn't that great so far).

This is what I have: Firmware Version: 1.11NA Hardware Version: A1. I checked the box and that version you mention is what came with it. I should of never upgraded firmware. You seem to know what you are talking about. If I were to exchange this one for a different DIR-825 and have saved my configuration, would I just be able to upload my saved configuration to the new router? Or is it router serial number specific? Also why is it that even with my other router, when I am downloading alot of stuff, after a while it seems to drop the connection. It is just overworked?

I wouldn't use the same configuration if you got a new 825 running 1.01.  It might accept the file, but since they run different versions, it might not work correctly.  Especially since you are going from 1.11 to 1.01 (backwards).

There have been issues with the latest firmware's on both these models.  For me with the 655 running 1.31, I have encountered port forwarding issue and issues with the router slowing down and basically freezing.  The 825 running 1.01 has been great, no issues that I have noticed with lots of torrents and constant web use by around 5-6 people.

One thing I would do on the 825, is turn of DNS relay, even if you end up getting one that's running 1.01.

Anyway, my 655 on 1.11 ran months without being restarted, and 825 running 1.01 has been just as solid.  I never should have upgraded my 655 to 1.31.
