Network Shares problem
« on: July 25, 2016, 10:07:37 AM »

Hi
I have a rare problem with my DNS 320L and after searching for a solution in google, I have found nothing.
I bought a DNS 320L two months ago. Everything works quite well, but there is something strange. The problem is that the share disappears from "Network Shares" and this makes inaccesible from Windows 10 and I don't know why. It can work perfectly for 3-4 days and suddenly one day it stops working, I can't access it from Windows 10. To solve this I have to go to "Network Shares" and add it again, with everything selected by default, read/write/, all accounts, etc. It works well, I can access it for several days and suddenly it stops working.

My theory, and probably it has no sense, but for what I've seen, this happens when I try to access from Windows when the DNS 320L is offline. Obviously I got an error. I turn the NAS online and there it is, the problem shows up.

I hope you can help me, thanks a lot in advance.

Greetings.

No expert

But sounds like faulty firmware/firmware error or how the 320L shuts down

MY 320L only shuts down when I reboot (firmware updates/app updates etc)  It remains powered on but HD will sleep

I can offer a temporary solution and that is to create a Dynamic DNS (free) @ https://www.dlinkddns.com/ and add this for FTP settings

If after shutdown you lose this facilIty I'd suggest looking at re-installing (or updatiNg if not already done so) the firmware

Thanks for the quick response.

I think the problem it's not when I shut it down, at least not always. I always shut it down before I go to sleep (my house is small and the DNS 320L's sound won't let my wife sleep  :P) and every morning I turn it on and it usually works well. I know it has no sense, at least for me (and I'm in my third year at Computer Engineering), but after trying several times, the problem only starts when I try to access it from Windows shares when the DNS 320L is offline. I have a DDNS at no-ip and also tried FTP and works well.

I'll try several things and let you know when I find a solution, maybe there are more like me with this problem.

I'll also try to reinstall (maybe update, because it has the 1.06v) the firmware.

Thanks again for the help

Greetings

Any chance you have a Windows 7 PC to test with?

Did you use the Windows Storage Utility (should be on installation cd or available to download from mydlink)?

Have you mapped the network drive?

From what I have read in the technical press it could well be a win10 problem caused in part by a poor implementation of the SMB/CIFS protocol which does strange things when microsoft is downloading user data and usage data from a win10 computer.

That would make this to have sense.

Yes I did use the Windows Storage Utility and yes, I mapped the network drive.

I could try it in a virtual machine, could it work?

Thanks a lot for the help. The NAS is working well since I started this post. I know it's strange but I'm almost sure that the problem is what ivan said, the poor implementation of the SMB/CIFS in Windows 10, because just after I try to access the NAS when i'ts powered-off (usually because I think it's on), the problem shows up, that's for sure (I've tested this).

Thanks again for the help.

Try a Windows 7 PC or a 7 VM may work. There are known issues with Windows 10 and some of it's networking operations.

Bewater,

When you say "Network Shares" in your OP are you referring to Win 10 network shares/drive mappings, or to the Network Shares menu option in the 320L's web browser GUI? (Management - Account Management - Network Shares)  If the latter, you may be having the same problem as me (see my "disappearing folder" post nearby). My NAS runs 24/7, but the problem still happens.

I believe he's referencing Windows Network Shares...

Oops, my fault. It disappeares from the Network Shares menu option in the 320L's web browser GUI. I would swear that I said it, sorry guys. It doesn't disappear from Windows 10, but it does from the web browser GUI when I try to access it from Windows 10 when it's powered-off.

If there is anything else that I didn't tell, please let me know. Maybe the problem is that I'm not explaining it very well. Sorry guys.

I'm gonna see your post holoperson and I'll tell you something.

EDIT: I saw your post but it's not the same problem. I've used FTP without any problem. I can access the NAS from outside my network (I'm using no-ip) and it works well.

P.D.: Just for curious, what's OP (I'm spanish :P).

Thanks again

Greetings.

OP is Original Post

So you are losing the Network Share Folders when/after your 320L is powered down?

How do you power down your 320L (Manual/System Managed) and to what state? (complete shutdown? HD Sleep?)

Again maybe someone more technical than me can clarify - I would look at re-installing firmware or possibly downgrading then upgrading back to original firmware.  It's a little time consuming and if I remember you'll need to save your configuration settings externally.
