Is there any known history on these switches for the PoE controller to go out and not give power to PoE devices after a power outage due to a lightening storm? This has happened to 4 of our 7 switches we have in production within the past month (2 different storms one being stronger than the other). They are running off of a rack mounted power strip. We have a Cisco 2960X switch in the same rack as one of the D-Link switches and it is still giving power to PoE devices so it was not affected.

These switches are fairly new. There could be some issues maybe. I would phone contact D-Link support and ask for help and information about this. If this is a HW issue, RMA maybe needed. Let us know if you find out anything.

Thank you Mr. Furry. I have already asked D-Link about this issue and they said that they cannot warranty a switch that was potentially hit by lightning. So I understand this argument and agree with it, however, for us to lose that many D-Link switches is a little concerning to me especially when its the same series switch. PoE is the only thing that went out on the switches. Other than that, they are passing network traffic without any problems. It just seemed odd to me that the only thing that would go out is the PoE. I was just curious to see if anyone else here had the same experience with this specific series of switches.

I would presume that if you did have a lightning strike that it probably would effect the PoE portion of the switch.

Haven't seen any posts regarding this. However this thread doesn't see much activity so may not be anyone seeing issues like this.

You might ask D=Link if there is a flat fee repair option for these switches.

I tried to google this generically and didn't come up with much.

You have since rebooted the devices, pulled out all the POE connections and re-attached? 

Any reason not running any sort of UPS on these? 

Best thing I've read: Have insurance??

Yes we have re-patched in all PoE devices as well as re-started the switches. They are not on UPS's, but on power strips.

Let me add that there is nothing really indicating that the switches were hit by lightning. The building lost power during the storm and when it was restored, the PoE on the switches was no longer working. This happened over a month ago and again 2 weeks ago with 2 different switches, but same model. However, we have a Cisco PoE switch that went through the same power outage 2 weeks ago and did not lose its PoE function. This Cisco switch is on the same rack and power strip as one of the switches that went out.

Would be something to look into for long term stability and safety. Especially if these are critical HW units, I would recommend checking into some UPS back up solutions. Wouldn't have to be expensive either. Just something to handle 10-15 minutes of time. UPS is best for handling power outages and storms. Power strips are not the best for this. Unless you can find really good power strips that actually handle power conditions.

Yes the switches are fully functional as non-PoE switches. Do you have a thought in mind?

Not exactly. When I searched, I remembered reading something like that.

Have you tried swapping power supplies with the working pow box and unit not working?

Power Failure (AC Power)
In the event of a power failure, just as a precaution, unplug the Switch. After the power returns, plug the switch back in
to the power socket.


I guess I would unplug all the ports, unplug the power, power up, wait for unit to come back on, then plug in and test 1 port...

Ok, so here is what I tried...

We have an RPS that I connected to one of the switches. Using the RPS to power the switch, I connected an WAP and it came on. I then plugged in the power cord into the switch so that it ran simultaneously with the RPS and PoE worked. I then removed the RPS from the switch and PoE still worked. At the present time I have the switch running on my bench with a WAP connected to it and it is still working.

Sorry for the lengthy and detailed reply. It seems like using the RPS kicked started the PoE on the switch. Not sure why this works, or exactly what it did to make it work, but it worked. We are testing the switch out by allowing it to run with an AP connected to it for a few days to see if it is stable.

Ok so I was able to kick the PoE back on again on the switches we have in production using the RPS. We are still testing the switches on our bench out to see if they go down at any point in time. So far they have been running for 2 days straight. I am also power cycling them on occasion to see if they lose the PoE function.

I wonder if this is a D-Link feature that these switches have to keep them from burning up during a spike/power surge that we are not aware of? Any D-Link engineers on this forum that can shed some light on this?
