What's Connected to my Network?
« on: July 17, 2009, 12:44:18 PM »

How can I tell what's connected to my Network?  I figured the Status page "LAN Computers" would list what's connected.  However, there are devices listed that are not actually connected, or even turned on.  Now I should mention that I've setup DHCP Reservation (Setup\Network Settings\DHCP Reservations List).  However, if the devices aren't actually connected, I would'nt think they'd be listed on the "Status" page.  If any event, how can I tell what devices are actually connected?

This is gonna sound like a smart aleck answer, but that is not my intent.

For Ethernet connected devices follow the cable to the device.  For wireless devices use the wireless association list, it will be to the second accurate.

The LAN clients list will list everything that hasn't timed out of it's ARP and or DHCP lease.

you can use a network discovery tool like look@lan.
It will list all devices of your LAN with actual state.
It is easy to install and has a easy to understand GUI.

And it's freeware

Any item that is the DHCP Reservation list will always show on the Status page whether the item is actually power on or not.  You may want to limit the numbers of items that you have reservations for, I just use mine for my Network Printer and a Wii.  Everything else gets a DHCP address.

Hi,

This is a feature some of us have asked for in the past.  My old DI-614+ had it as have other routers...but the fancy DIR-655 does not.

Go Figger.
