DNS-320L server printer issue
« on: September 27, 2016, 09:04:44 PM »

Hi,
recently i just bought this NAS closure to replace my old DSN-323.
The problem i faced is the printer server cannot detect my printer (HP laserjet M1132)
My old DNS-323 work flawlessly with the printer but recently the case started giving problem & i decided to replaced it.
After i setting up complete for DNS-320L, i plug in the usb printer to the case,
the case detect the printer as USB storage instead of printer at printer information.
i tried use IP to find the printer but the //IP/lp cannot be found.
Can anyone give me some tips to solve this problem?

I would check with D-Link support and see if the 320L supports USB printers. If it does not, you can always get a LAN to USB printer server device and connect it to your printer and network.

It does support USB printers (we have a client with an HP Colour Laser attached) although I think it only supports USB1.1 and USB2.0.

@weefoong.
There are two things you can look at.
1) is the USB light at the front of the unit lit when the printer is plugged in and powered on?
2) when you log in via the webUI and go to 'Management' --> 'System Management' --> 'USB Devices' (at the left of the screen) what do you see in the Printer Information section when the printer is plugged in and powered on?

As far as I can remember the USB light on the unit should be off if a printer is attached and the printer  name should appear in the printer information ('no USB printer detected' will appear if the printer is switched off).

Another thing, have you given the DNS-320L a fixed IP address?  We have found doing so is better when using the print server.

Thanks for the reply FurryNutz & Ivan.
1. the USB light at the front of the unit did not light up after i plug in my printer, but since i tried print with this status, the printer did not print out anything. After that i tried restart the NAS, the USB light turn to orange light with the printer connected to NAS during the restart
2. in the webUI, i can't see the printer information after i plug in my printer. After i restart NAS with printer connected (orange light on USB shown), the USB storage showing the printer manufacture brand & model, but the printer information shows nothing

i'm using NAS with fixed ip 192.168.0.30

Really appreciate for the help provide, wish i could find a solution with your guys input

Only thing I can think of if to power off both NAS and printer fully. Swap out the USB cable between the printer and NAS then power ON the printer first then power on the NAS.

All I can say is that it should work because it does for our client.

In that situation the NAS is on 24/7/365, the printer is always plugged in but is switched on at the time the office opens and switched off when the office closes.

Since I am not familiar with your printer I will get my parts guy to get a full manual for me to read to see if there is something there that could be causing the problem, there shouldn't be but you can never tell with multifunction printers (we have has problems with those with built in card readers messing up how they are seen by print servers).

I don't think the printer has a LAN connection in the back. If it did, it would be easy to connect the printer to the main host router or LAN switch.

If you can't seem to get the DNS to detect the printer, then I recommend getting a USB to LAN print server device connected. Will make it so that anyone on the network can print to the printer.
